The MAC in the 90's was a totally different animal than this current version is. Regardless we've completely wasted a new facility with coaches who were never going to win anything.Diemilkweed wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 3:41 pmI have been going to BGSU games since 1976. It's not the last 8 years. It's since Larranaga commented for the 3rd season in a row in the 90's "I don't know why we can't win on the road".
It has seriously been that long. Minimum 30 years.

Re: vs. NIU
I totally agree, Curtis has been awful this season. He fires up dumb shots, poor court visibility & turns the ball over pretty consistently. I'd rather see Turner or Elsasser in over Curtis at this point. Oneal has been playing OK when given the opportunity actually. Agee should easily be starting alongside Towns, Ayers, Metheny. When Metheny is off, i've never seen a player more off & when he's on its lights out, it's crazy.Diemilkweed wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 3:42 pmI disagree with Curtis being one of our 5 best. EH cannot finish at the rim to save his life. HE can get there any time he wants against any team. But he is not a threat because he will NOT hit that layup.fanatic13 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 1:04 pm I know this year is a lost cause but at this point we have to start out best 5 players Agee, towns, Ayers, Metheny, and Curtis. This allows Turner who has been playing better to replace Ayers, towns, and Agee as sixth man then mills can be our top guard off the bench. Oneal and elsasser fill in as needed which is all assuming we don't have Lightfoot.
Huger has 2 years left after this year. I have no idea how it would work but I wouldn't mind letting Watkins finish the year off as head coach. I don't want him long term but he has a good mix of connecting with the players, helping with the defense, and actually having some fire. I like what I've seen from him while noon is just eh to me. If we take care of business at home vs eastern and Central we should be going to Cleveland so might as well give somebody else a chance
I'd much rather have Turner in the game than Curtis.
Re: vs. NIU
I went to the UT/BG game and the fan experience was so much better - i sat in their premium seats. Their production, the way they run their facility and everything is so much better than BG. I'm so annoyed why there is a single line / single point of entry to get into the parking lot for the BB/CC lot - there is always a slow line and there's hardly any attendance. What would happen if the place was 75-100% full? I feel like you'd miss the whole game waiting in line. You'd think they would figure out a more fluid way to separate parking pass & pay for parking people with all the entrances an exits.
I've been a season ticket holder now for 12 years and went to games when I was younger. This year is easily the most depressing. I hope they revamp the program for next year regardless of how this one ends up and they also work on the little things like the fan experience to keep people coming back. We have such an awesome facility and opportunity to make this program incredible, its just sad to see it in its current state.

Re: vs. NIU
All part of why I gave up my season tickets this year after more than 20 years!
Re: vs. NIU
We did too but we sat in the cheapest seats in the upper levels.
I still think savage Hall is a total dump compared to the stroh, much worse scoreboard/video boards, etc. The concourses still feel dingy 1980s when you're not in the new lobby, seat comfort was awful. That said you couldn't be more right about the GameDay operation/fan experience. Better/easier parking (which is absurd given the locations of the 2 facilities), QR codes on seat arms to take you to the roster/game info, better and cheaper concessions, better music, more exciting announcer (even my wife who barely pays attention asked why our announcer doesn't get as excited).
Really quite pathetic that the people that run our operations can drive 20 mins up the road and see how another MAC school does it and check out minor league hockey and baseball orgs that have always hit it out of the park with GameDay experience. And yet still the BG operation is a notch below our HS games.
Re: vs. NIU
It starts at the top. The theme is consistent at BGSU. No accountability. Ego, control, what’s best for the University, in that order. You might be sitting in a line to park for 20 minutes, but senior administrators are out making money on the side. Moosbrugger got fired, but nothing has changed so far. More tweeting, no actual action.
Re: vs. NIU
I am hoping that the more tweeting shows an AD that is at least engaged in the position. I do think it's noble the way he's working to bring together all of the programs under his umbrella. It's also notable how coaches Loeffler and Fralick get called out/mentioned but Huger does not. I'm hoping he sees the writing on the wall and is just riding out the season.
He took over at an odd time. It would be difficult for him to make any meaningful changes in both on court or operations stuff once the balls were already in motion. I'm hoping like hell that he's observing all of this and is willing to start making some changes once the season is over. I cannot fathom why you'd fire Moosbrugger (and conceivably pay a buyout) if you're just going to hire another AD that isn't willing to make changes (or tie his hands if that is the case).

Re: vs. NIU
Huger is the coach who used social media basically until he got his extension. Then once Turner left he admittedly avoids it. The same type of awareness it takes to dismiss players the day after your worst career loss while playing those players until the final horn.
Re: vs. NIU
I credit the comfy seats to club level, they were super padded lol. The QR code on the chairs was super cool! The fog / little fireworks was a cool & probably cheap little cheap touch. My son thought it was awesome - he wants to go to more UT games now hahhahammb wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 7:57 pmWe did too but we sat in the cheapest seats in the upper levels.

I have been going to BG games since that time. You're right. MAC basketball in the 90's was in an entirely different strata. We were possibly the 8th best conference in the nation at times and there were NBA prospects all over the place.

Moved out of town long before the Stroh was built. And frankly, I am not impressed. I was in better MAC arenas in the 80's - 90'a in Miami, EMU, Ball State, and OU. And in those, you didn't HAVE to walk to the top of the seats just to walk back DOWN to your seats.
Who the hell decided that was a good idea?
The Stroh beats hell out of KSU's place in the 80's or WMU's place now. But, so do some HS gyms.
Re: vs. NIU
Yeah, I will always believe the decision to go all in on D1 football (while still becoming the worst conference in the sport) killed MAC hoops, which at the time was one of the premier MId-Majors. Quickly conferences like the MVC made inroads by not playing football while all of our schools spent almost nothing on hoops.BleedOrange wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 4:55 pmguest44 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 4:29 pmThe MAC in the 90's was a totally different animal than this current version is. That ship has largely sailed, and it ain't coming back. There's no reason with our budget and facility that we're not one of the top 3-4 programs in the MAC. Despite our resources we continue to flounder between 6th-10th in the conference. Even though that conference has gone downhill in the past 25 yrs.
Re: vs. NIU
I assume that was budgeting to not have to dig down. The open concourse is wonderful so I LOVE having the seats below the concourse, but if you're not going to dig it down so the court sits well below ground level the only option is to go up to go down. IT does suck, it's why my grandmother no longer attends (with only 1 elevator), but it really doesn't bother me. I'd much rather go up to go down than give up the open concourses.Diemilkweed wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 4:57 pmMoved out of town long before the Stroh was built. I do wish they'd built the seating steeper and put cupholders in all the seats. I wish they would move the media to the concourse and put seats on the sideline again. But overall it's a great place to watch a game. It certainly can be loud when the team/opponent draws people in, but that's happened less than 10x in the decade of the Stroh. That's not the arena's fault.
Re: vs. NIU
This could be wrong, but I would believe it:
I heard they went up instead of digging down when building the Stroh because of the way some of the piping in the locker room had to go. The hot tubs in there require piping to be done a certain way, and it caused them to be unable to dig down. So they had to build the entire arena around that issue.
No idea if it’s true or not, but like I said, it wouldn’t shock me.

Re: vs. NIU
Resources are nice but in my opinion a little overrated. Great recruiting and coaching trump all, or else Florida State, Tennessee and Nebraska would never have a losing season in football.hammb wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 4:59 pm Yeah, I will always believe the decision to go all in on D1 football (while still becoming the worst conference in the sport) killed MAC hoops, which at the time was one of the premier MId-Majors. I think the downfall of the MAC is pretty simple because it’s the same story of the region itself, people started flooding the Sun Belt cities and getting out of here. There just simply isn’t the local talent there used to be because so many people have relocated to the south. Look how much the Sun Belt Conference has improved in recent years as well as the sheer dominance of the SEC
