I'd like to thank Dan Dakich
I do somewhat agree with DrDesert. I Think Dakich has pulled the wool over a lot of our fans' eyes. The support here is less than it was, but still there are a number of people who feel Dan is this great guy and coach.BleedOrange wrote:DrDesert wrote:First of all, I'm not Dale Barnhard. My concerns for the basketball program were expressed to those who know me long before I found this forum. I don't value winning at all costs, but if you want to go there, you can make a pretty strong case that Dakich's success years only happened as a result of Larranaga's recruits.
Manipulation (according to Webster) is to handle with skill or to cause by clever maneuvering to act as one wishes. When I hear fans repeating the Dakich story line and excuses, I feel they have been manipulated, even when they don't realize it. I've been fortunate to have experienced a lot of success in my life working with people and I don't appreciate the Dakich style of management.
As for getting beat up on the forum, that's not totally true. Despite the fact that I've not called anyone names or tried to humiliate them, many of my posts get deleted, so you only get a chance to read the ones attacking me. No need to feel sorry for me as I can handle it. I just hope we can get some good leadership into the men's basketball program as we have in so many other sports.
I can understand the comments about his mind games with the players. To an extent, "mind games" are fair game for a coach, and perhaps DD takes them to an extreme - I don't know . However, it's hard to buy the idea that he has effectively manipulated the fans, or even attempted to beyond showing a friendly public front for good pub. His approval ratings seem damned low, so even if he has attempted to manuplate the fans, he isn't doing it very well.
As for it being manipulative, I don't know why, but I get the feeling that the Dan Dakich everybody thinks they know is not nearly like the real Dan Dakich. I have no proof, but I just don't think he's nearly the nice, jolly guy that so many seem to think he is...

I, personally, have always wondered why - at least when coaching the team - he talks to the assistant coaches out of the "corner of his mouth" and never looks anyone in the eye. I know - - - that's a dumb observation, but I always wonder about somebody who can't look you in the eye when talking to you.

Actually, it's so you can't read his lips.....

Most times you would be more worried about the game, which is taking place in front of you. Thus, talking out of the side of your mouth would allow the coach to multi-task. That would be my guess. I wonder if we can do a mock game in the interview process to avoid such things in future coaches. Wow, what losing will cause people to worry about .

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
I remember being in school in 2001 and being relieved when Dakich pulled a 'Bobby Cremmins' and came back after a couple days at WVU.
Now here I am covering the Mountaineers, being around the team on a daily basis, and I'm thinking the exact same thing. I'm glad he's not here because this WVU team wouldn't be nearly as good. The media guys that were here for Dakich's press conference give me crap about him every time I mention BG Basketball.
He was great for the program... for a time. That time has passed and it's time both sides moved on.
