Yeah Jans...go home and get your shine box

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Mr. Kingston is proving to be a great hire, at least on paper. We have yet to see either of these major coaching hires actually win a game, but they seem to have absolutely everything we could want to be successful.
I can honestly say I haven't been this pumped about the coaching staffs in the two key men's sports for a long, long time.
There is actually hope that this 46-year string of futility might be coming to and end soon.

I pay lots of attention to two sports and am a bandwagoner for two others. Of the 4 major sports I am happy with 3 of the coaches and just don't know anything about the other. That's pretty good IMO.BGWriter wrote:<----------Happy Falcon fan.

Re: Chris Jans - New Head Coach
In his first year Chris Kingston sure has made some big decisions. He has hired the head coaches for the two most visible programs. Neither has coached a single game yet but I am thrilled about both new hires.
There may yet be one big decision this academic year. Isn't it this spring or summer when we are expecting to hear about the future of Doyt Perry Stadium?

I thought a plan was supposed to be presented this past football season. I assumed it never happened because of the AD change.MarkL wrote:There may yet be one big decision this academic year. Isn't it this spring or summer when we are expecting to hear about the future of Doyt Perry Stadium?
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.
Re: Chris Jans - New Head Coach
I am just glad we got JANS before the VCU job became available. Shaka will be leaving and Jans may have been on their list at VCU
Re: Chris Jans - New Head Coach
Top assistant Mike Rhoades and NCAA tourney participant Jamion Christian (Mt St Mary) would be two of the leading guys to replace Shaka. However he's turned down better jobs than Wake Forest, BC and Marquette before.

Capital Planning and the University Architect have the plan and are reviewing it and the different cost scenarios.FalconTurf wrote:I thought a plan was supposed to be presented this past football season. I assumed it never happened because of the AD change.

Art Vandelay? Good guy...designed the new addition to the Guggenheim.transfer2BGSU wrote: the University Architect
Jans has had some great mentors in the profession besides Marshall. At Elmhurst he assisted Jim Whitesell, currently an assistant at St. John's and formerly an associate head coach under the late Rick Majerus. He was also an assistant under Porter Moser, currently the coach at new MVC conference member Loyola and also a former Majerus assistant. He also worked under Scott Trost, currently the coach of nationally ranked DII Lewis College and a former associate head coach at Michigan.
His other assistant at Chipola (besides Heier) was Micah Byars, currently the Director of Basketball Operations at Sweet 16 participant Iowa State. He'd likely have to take a pay cut to come here as an assistant but it might be worth it to gain the coaching and recruiting experience.
Re: Chris Jans - New Head Coach
I would think an asst job at BG would pay equally or even be a pay raise for a DOB job at Iowa St. That's me. Typically DOB's are a fourth assitant or in football terms, a "recruiting coordinator" of sorts, among many other duties.
Re: Chris Jans - New Head Coach
Home run hire. Notice the 7 year hangover the media had when it was open for questions. Jans said more in 15 minutes than Orr since 2010.

Re: Chris Jans - New Head Coach
Except for the JUCO and recruiting philosophy question from twitter, the coach pretty much outlined what he expected. If he watched a pickup game last night, he knew the level of talent BG has and what he needs (hint: shooter and point guard).
I hope Chauncey stays and has an excellent two years. I'd still like to see Zack Denny play more than a couple of minutes, and will the big kid ever play?

I noticed that. I stopped in for the presser and was shocked that there were only a couple of media questions.guest44 wrote:Home run hire. Notice the 7 year hangover the media had when it was open for questions. Jans said more in 15 minutes than Orr since 2010.
Kudos to Mr. Kingston for the hire, and even more kudos for giving a shout out to Bill Frack; without him we definitely couldn't make a hire of this caliber.
Loved what Jans said about having to be the face of the program and doing what it takes to connect with students and the community...that is key to any coaching hire at BG, IMO. Also loved that he already told the players last night that they must work to recruit their fellow students as well. They're the ones on campus, in class, etc...
I think we're in far better hands than we have been in a long time.
Re: Chris Jans - New Head Coach
We're not Alabama footballl and I certainly don't condone "cutting" players, but Coach Jans should use every academic and transfer avenue available to him to free up space for "his guys."
This is a dream scenario but I would prefer a high major transfer (ie Hollowell [yay!] or Etherington [not so much] from IU come to mind), a senior/post grad guy, 2-3 JUCOs who can help immediately and a big man to redshirt.
That is quite possibly asking for more than we have available scholarship wise, but that's why we have place like AZZ too

Just talked to @ChaunceyOrr_21, he says he lets God lead his footsteps which is why he will be staying at #BGSU and wants a #MAC title.
