Did Dakich run over your dog or something?[/quote]
No, he did not. I just can't believe that people continue buying the Dakich story after all these years and turn the other way when it comes to the problems that exist with the program. And I'd still like to know how common it is for a college basketball coach to have five technicals at this stage of the year? He sets a really poor example for his players. But, by golly, we play "hard" and we have a "tough" team.

If you want to know how common it is for a coach to have five technicals at this time of year, I suggest you start here, www.google.com.
I'm not sure what "story" you think we're buying into. His overall winning % is pretty decent. He's had a couple of teams that probably should have had NCAA bids and he graduates his players.
Areas of concern are the recent sub par seasons that bracket last year's 18 win season and the lack of stability in the roster. There isn't a sense that a program is being built to the same extent that there is in hockey, the women's team (in particular) and football and that is troubling. I'm not ready to say the guy should go though.

The worst part of this whole basketball program is that the only way you can really be optimistic for the future is if you're totally blind. Next year could be an improvement, if nobody transfers. Another year of Samarco, learning how to use Floyd correctly, and development for some of the young guys. Wright has the option for another Senior year if he wants it, but considering a lot of the stories I've heard about his feelings towards our coaching staff I'm not convinced he'll actually take that year.
But I don't see how anyone can be that optimistic following next season. LeFeld's feet are a major question whether or not he can play another season...that's a chronic problem there. In fact, he probably shouldn't even be playing now, but the kid's got so much heart...what if a Doctor or his parents talk some sense into him this offseason? Even if they don't we don't have another center in the system at all, so at best we're hoping Matt plays next year and we're filling the spot with either a drastically undersized guy or a true freshman in '07.
Beyond that, we do have some young talent that could be promising. Clements, Moten, & Marschall. As I've said all season long Marschall can be good if he can add weight. If he cannot he'll never improve, he's not strong enough right now. Many players can gain, some guys cannot. Hopefully he's one who can. I'd be real surprised if Clements & Moten both stick around here for too much longer, they cannot be happy watching this team suck from the bench.
I don't know if it's cliche or not, but a saying that is often very true is that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I don't think Dan has learned anything from his history of losing players over the last few years. He keeps rationalizing it that somebody was homesick, and guys leave, and he wanted to be an NBA guy, etc, etc. Excuses, excuses, excuses. At some point he better look in the mirror and see why kids are leaving. Up till this point I've seen no indication that he's changed anything in his style. That makes it a pretty safe bet in my mind that we'll continue to lose players.
I'm not ready to run Dan out of town yet, but I'd be writing my check towards the buyout the very second that we have another kid transfer. You cannot build a program if you lose kids every year. If he's not going to take the time to make the necessary changes within himself to prevent this, then I'm not so sure we can keep him around.
As for graduating players, it should be expected. I'll also let you know that when the new numbers start coming out our graduation rates will look awful. All these transfers absolutely count against your graduation rate. Maybe they shouldn't, but they do in the NCAA's eyes.
I do think Dan is a good guy, but at some point I think we have set that aside and think if he's the best guy for our basketball program. If he cannot put a competitive product on the court him being a nice guy & graduating the few players that stick here is just not enough to rationalize a contract extension.

Brian, don't you think that he has and that he is just presenting this attitude for the media and fans?hammb wrote:I don't think Dan has learned anything from his history of losing players over the last few years. Hopefully he has. Maybe I'm just beeing too pessimistic, but I get the distinct impression that Moten and/or Clements will be gone this year. Clements' situation, specifically, seems to mirror Raheem Moss almost perfectly. Moten was a guy who was highly recruited and only came here because of grades. With the amount of playing time that he's gotten on this below average team it wouldn't surprise me at all if he transferred somewhere else.Redwingtom wrote:Brian, don't you think that he has and that he is just presenting this attitude for the media and fans?hammb wrote:I don't think Dan has learned anything from his history of losing players over the last few years. Took your advice and can't find anything on google.....even though you were the one that said it's not so rare for coaches to get t'd. Show me that I'm wrong and find a bunch of coaches who have five technicals this year.
Anyone see Dakich on Toledo 11 a couple of years ago when he used the f-bomb every other word? I saw it and it really didn't make me proud of how the university was being represented.
Hammb was right on with regard to the transfers. The bottom line is that basketball should be fun.......and I don't think many BG players have fun. Dakich totally breaks their spirit and destroys their passion for the game. I happen to believe that you can demand a lot from your players, treat them with dignity, and give them a good educational experience without using intimidation, manipulation, and mind games.

After reading all this, the only solution to the Dakich delima is to abolish the basketball program. That way, he is not fired nor is his contract bought out, yet he is no longer at the helm of the program. This way everyone is happy and we can all focus on the women's team whose success is demanding that all men's basketball fans turn their attention to the ladies and never again follow the men. However, what do we do when the women's team has an off year. Yes, we reinstate the men's team, however, it will be young without immediate results which will, in turn, result in the demand of the dismissal of the coach (whoever it is at that time). Then, we can only hope by that time the women's team is on top again so we can go full circle.
I like that steak comes from cows. That is why a cow will not think twice about eating you.
Then by all regards get money together and present it to Paul Krebs to pay off his contract. Yes, he is behind in building the program. Curt Miller has been absolutely amazing building up the women's program and Coach Paluch is re-building the hockey team. But, I'm not willing to give up on Dakich. It said a lot for him when a player was caught with possession of MJ and the player was kicked off the team.
Check out our new BGSU hockey site: http://www.bgsuhockey.com
I woulndn't go so far as to say that. Fitch had major injury issues. In all likelihood, he wasn't going to play ever again anyway.BGDrew wrote: It said a lot for him when a player was caught with possession of MJ and the player was kicked off the team.

How many D-1 sports programs are run on the idea that it should be fun? From golf to swimming? I don't think the ladies at Tennessee have a coach that looks like fun- nor do the UConn Huskies. I don't see a lot of the top programs that run on fun. And if you are not at practice, how can you talk about dignity? Why do the guys talk about how much Dackich has made them into men ready to go into the world? How do you know what goes on at practices all over the country?
Just askin....

Sorry drdesert, you're the one making the assertions, namely that five technical fouls is an unreasonably large number. Your the one who needs to supply the facts to back up his argument.
I'm not going to bother because I don't give a flying J truck plaza.
As for the statement that college basketball should be fun...you may be onto something. I think Dan needs to put a cotton candy machine in next to the bench and learn how to make balloon animals. Then you'll really have a clown on the sidelines...

Flipper: It is common knowledge that many kids have a fear of clowns. I think Dan's ploy to become a clown on the sidelines is another tactic he is using to strike fear in his players. First he benches a player for playing poorly and now he is attempting to intimidate players by preying on their childhood fears! When will this madness ever end?
