OK..season's over...time to make a change.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Coach Orr Pros and Cons
If we can afford it, axe him.
I just don't know if we CAN afford it, or if we can afford a decent coach who is willing to come here for less money than other schools.

Re: Coach Orr Pros and Cons
Okay, I didn't mean go out and try to sign a major conference coach away from another school. The reason I put "name" in parenthesis was because I realize what BG needs to find is an excellent assistant for a very successful program, and hope he can bring that pedigree of success to BG.Matty B wrote:Oh really? A bigger "name" coach? We need someone you've heard of in order to be considered "qualified" for this job? How much bigger of a "name" can we get to BG? Since Orr is a former BIG EAST coach of the year, and we clearly "need" to be shooting for a bigger "name" we should be targeting current Big East Coach of the Year candidates like Notre Dame's Mike Brey or Marquette's Buzz Williams. Either of those would surely be chomping at the bit for the BG job. MAC schools generally don't bring in big names, but rather produce them. (i.e. Laranagga, Waters, Heath, etc and in football Meyer, Kelly, Hoke, etc), Gee whiz, this is almost as bad as NFL fans being upset at their team for not bringing in a "big name" offensive lineman in free agency.BGWriter wrote: There is no reason BG can't bring in a bigger "name" coach and get this turned completely around. With basketball, it can happen in a hurry, as Curt Miller has shown, and it can happen at a place like BG.
Of course, the impetus to get all this moving in the right direction has to come from the athletic director with the support of the Board of Trustees.
If they would truly put forth a plan to upgrade BG's men's basketball, it could be done in a relatively short time. It just takes the right hire.
Get the right man in place, with these facilities and the financial backing the program now has, and there's no reason BG can't get back to the NCAA tourney and get students excited about the program again.
As for Coach Orr, he's had four full recruiting seasons now, and only 1 of those were recruiting to the Stroh, and he's got BG competing closely with the top teams in the conference. We had an exciting season, a great home record, and the feeling that we can beat any team in the conference going into the tournament. That's all you can ask for from the coach. It's up to the players from there. I think Coach Orr has done a great job of putting these kids in a position to win, and I expect to see that continue this week and hopefully seasons to come.
With the resources the basketball program now has, there's no reason they can't find a very good prospective coach and pay him enough to keep him at BG for more than a few years if he becomes successful -- or at least until he has developed some assistants that can step in and keep the program moving forward.
Being a Coach of the Year guarantees zip so far as coaching acumen is concerned. Hell, I can think of lots of folks who have been coaches of the year in major conferences that lost their big-time jobs a short time later.
BG now has the resources to aim higher than it has in decades. We just need to pull the trigger.

Not true, BGWriter - - we do NOT yet have the resources. There's the rub. We're gonna have to wait for those resources. Perhaps 10 years or so.
Re: Coach Orr Pros and Cons
Any chance of using part of that hefty donation from last year to buy out Orr?

That's what they're saying- You didn't GET a healthy donation last year. And as long as the donator REMAINS healthy, you won't.

I think it's time to call J G Wentworth and say "We need cash now!" Seriously, there's got to be a way to borrow using that future gift as collateral.mustangfalcon wrote:Not true, BGWriter - - we do NOT yet have the resources. There's the rub. I've had enough. I'm done until we get a coach. To much driving and time wasted.
This program just isn't worth my continued emotional investment. I'll see you guys when we see a new coach.

Couldn't agree more. I reinvested this season with a new arena and a team that should have been good. I left sometimes thinking I cared more than the team. Orr can't motivate a team, and he sure can't motivate a fanbase. I'm out.

Yeah, probably. I wouldn't want anything untimely to happen to Frack until AFTER Orr. "Ten years of mediocrity"
Let's get the shirts printed up.

I think I can put my finger on it. Evern under Dakich II, the kids had swagger. I'm thinking Cory Eyink (sp), and others with an attitude. Contrast Thomas, Brown and Oglesby and Joe Jak before. Out with a whimper. Sire, in time, Thomas will be remembered for the sheer numbers he put up, but the teams are going to be so forgettable.
