Glad its not Downey. We need more of a splash and to get a fresh face in here. Forget about what happened and on to the next. I predict that whomever it is we will all get excited and then find reasons for him to be given 2-3 years of a leash until we start worrying about him leaving or the hire in general.

I give the new guy a honeymoon that lasts until his first loss....unless he's a closet ass patter too.

Per HoopDirt.com . . .

BREAKING . . . Chris Beard to be named head coach at UALR

Beard comes from Angelo St. (Texas area) . . . Most notably was the Assoc HC at Texas Tech from 2001-11

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that UALR probably pays a little more than the BG job. Similar conferences and he likely was down the interviewing road with them before everything happened with Jans, so he wanted to see it through.

Maybe BG is the door that opens?

Not sure Downey is out of the mix yet. The others don't do anything more for me or make a "splash" anymore than Downey would.

I noticed Downey coached with Jans before in a previous JUCO stop. Some of Jans good qualities are bound to be imparted into Downey.

Since Jans was fired, lots of inspirational, "dont' quit" type stuff on his twitter account

Does anyone know how long the job has to be posted before they hire someone? I was thinking maybe a week since it (presumably) has state benefits?

That would make the official watch start Thursday and not a realistic hiring day until Friday at the absolute earliest. But we're very likely another week or more away.

The assistant coach at Michigan state doesnt make more of a splash then a Division 2 head coach and an assistant? :drinkers:

The Wisconsin assistants (Greg Gard and Lamont Paris) are looking better and better to me.

Huger just hasn't done enough to distinguish himself as an assistant coach. As I've said before, we're severely limiting ourselves by allowing factors that contribute nothing to winning (like being an alum) to influence this process. Miami didn't make the NCAA tournament. Huger hasn't tweeted in almost a year, and if we want more than 1500 people to attend games that has to play a role. Huger isn't known as the best recruiter on the UM staff. I'm sure he's a great person that loves BG, but the bar has to be set higher than that. I hope he gets a Final Four or similar credentials verifying success in player development and recruiting on his resume, but they're not there right now.

I get it. Downey is not a very sexy pick – at all. Lol.

But, I’m just as concerned we make a cookie cutter hire of someone from a high-major school and we smell like a rose at the press conference, but suck in 2 years.

I am good with whoever we hire provided we get someone with talent to be the head coach and some energy, competitive drive, and desire to build this thing.

I glanced at the Michigan State coach bios. I kinda like Fife’s background more so than Stephens. Mike Garland – a definite no for me [based on tough time he had at Cleveland State]. Fife is only 35 years old and already has 6 years D-I head coach experience at IPFW. He was a part of the infancy of that program going from independent status into the Summit League. I like that on a resume.

I like Downey because he appears to be a grinder, kinda like Jans. Not afraid to be the head guy at D2 or JUCO level. And he's well traveled. That's great for recruiting. Also, as the head guy, he has run the show from A to Z - - - granted on a smaller scale. I like that kind of timeline better than a lifetime assistant at a big school or schools.

Not sure if the longtime assistant is the kind of experience we want. I would think an assistant at a big school is very focused on one specific part of the program. I’m sure a learning curve would exist at BG when you take over the whole deal. Some guys are just cut out to be assistant coaches. They don’t have the moxie to run the whole thing [i.e. - Orr would be a great assistant – doesn’t have the talent to be a head guy].

I want the guy who wants to run the show, no matter where it is.

95k less, actually, for a coach who had been there 15 years.

GENO FORD

He is from Ohio (Mr. Basketball 1993?)
Played in Ohio (OU with Gary Trent, those were some good OU teams)
Coached in Ohio (Kent State, and had success)

He would have a facility and financial backing unlike Kent State or Bradley.

To me, he at least gets an interview. He know the MAC and how to win in it and get to the NCAA tournament.

And now, as I am sure will happen :D , blast away.......

We just hired the top assistant at the top midmajor in the country. Lets shoot a little higher then guys just on the roster, ex players and guys who got fired. All of those guys might make fine assistants. Lets get someone big time and let him figure it out.
