ACC suspends official...maybe MAC can learn from this....

Post by BGorDeath »

We always complain about MAC officiating. The ACC suspended an official for screwing up. Here's the story:

Maybe the MAC could do the same for some of the atrocious calls we've seen over the years in all MAC games.

Some MAC games would then have to be canceled as there wouldn't be enough non-suspended refs left! :P

If the MAC were to suspend officials, we might not have any available to work league games any more! Seriously, MAC officials are almost embarrassing as a fan of our conference. I’m not even talking about the BG/OU game or even calls against BG, calls that go our way sometimes are even suspect, or when I watch other MAC games. If there’s one thing I can’t stand about basketball (and there aren’t many), it’s officials making bad calls. I swear sometimes they call horseshit fouls just to show they are “paying attention.” That little squirrelly looking guy in our game against OU was horrible. There was one play in particular in the second half where Phillips was shoved in the back by an OU player and he was called for traveling. I was like WTF. It seemed like every time there was a whistle, this guy was calling something on us. But even in football during bowl seasons, I was watching one of the bowl games (can’t remember which one it was), and the refs were clueless and I was thinking I wonder what conference they are from. It was eventually announced they were MAC officials and I said it figures.

If players and coaches are required to deal with bad officiating and have to adjust and deal with it and play through it, then officials should have to deal with consequences for their mistakes as well. That’s the way I see it at least. If they are paid to do a job, they should do a good one and do it correctly. If they weren’t officials and were working another job and doing a poor job, they’d get fired. Officiating should be no different.

If there was an action that had a direct impact on the play, call it. If there was a ticky-tack action that has no barring on the play at all, let them play. There are 10 guys running around in a small area, there is bound to be contact, etc. But a lot of what is called in a game is junk. Let the players decide the game, not the refs. When there's a foul or violation, call it, otherwise, run the floor in your striped shirt and collect your paycheck at the end. If a coach or player even mentions or talks about a call made by an official, there are repercussions to be had. The same should apply to a ref that makes bad calls or blows calls. If players and coaches are held accountable, then so should refs as well.

All you need to know about MAC Officials is that former MAC referee Sam Lichliter (below) is now supervisor of officials for the conference. Sam was a horrible referee and all the coaches in the league knew it. I used to hear the opposing coaches talking to each other about Sam before and after games. Funny stuff.

I honestly believe the league office gave him this assignment just to get him off the court.

Yes, this season. He was introduced at the MAC Preview Luncheon in November.
