ROCK BOTTOM

Post by BGSU33 »

Today’s game was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen BG play in a long time, period. No ifs, ands, buts or maybes about it. After 15 minutes of play, it was just embarrassing for our team, program, players, coaches and fans. With six minutes to go in the first half, we were down 28-4!!! I repeat - with six minutes to go in the first half, we were down 28-4! Not to #1 UConn or #2 Duke on the road, we were at home, against a .500 Wright State team that just lost at home to Cleveland State the game before this one, and we trailed by 24 points. Today was just sickening to watch, just terrible. Yeah, our guys tried to fight back in the second half and didn’t give up, blah, blah, blah; but that’s what we’ve been saying ALL season long. It’s just getting so old watching us dig large holes for ourselves, not able to get out of them, and lose game after game. Turnovers, missed shots, out-rebounded, bad passes, fouls, etc., etc., etc. It was an embarrassing performance and I actually felt bad for our players out there today.

Today basically summed up where we are as a team and where we are as a program. We had a rough start to the season, seemed to get it pointed in the right direction by the start of the MAC season, and are fading extremely fast to close out this season. We have now lost six of our last seven games, we have a losing record overall (9-16 with two wins against non D-I teams), and on top of that, we also have a losing record at home (5-6) with just two games remaining at AA and are on the verge of finishing with a losing record at home for the first time in 20 years (not since 1985-86). This will also be our third losing season in four years. This team needs help everywhere, offensively, defensively – just EVERYWHERE. Days like today are a reminder that just when you think things can’t get worse, they can.

I could rip this team even more after today's performance, but why? I think our men did the talking with their play and there's nothing to be said.

A Rock Bottom Concern

Post by commonsense »

Obviously this season has not gone the way some on this board expected it to. It will be our fourth losing season against D1 teams in six years. Right now, it does seem like it is rock bottom. However, I fear that rock bottom is yet to come. We still have 5 games left. I just hope that we can eek out one more win to reach double digits. That is something we can be extremely proud of.

Gotta agree with ya, 33. I think that was the worst BG hoops game I've ever seen. Just looking up at that scoreboard and seeing us down 28-4??

It was just plain brutal. The one bright spot for me is Erik Marschall. I really like his style of play and think he's gonna be a very good player.

I don't know what to say at this time.

The most disappointing thing about this season is the lack of growth. I think almost all of us knew that this would be a rebuilding year (again), but what we expected was a young team that would grow as the season went on. Unfortunately, that just hasn't happened. Saturday's game was the first contribution Marschall has made in the last 10-15 games, and none of the other freshmen are getting enough PT to do much. The team has actually gotten steadily worse as the season went on. In the beginning we beat VT (albeit in a fluke), and we were keeping our games close against everyone. Lately we've been struggling more and more just to keep things close, and when we did get to play with a big lead we almost completely blew it.

I don't know all of what's wrong with this team, but I think it looks a LOT like none of the players want to listen to their coach. In the EMU game Dan told them repeatedly not to throw the ball into the corners when EMU was pressing. What'd they do? They continued to throw the ball into the corners. Late in Saturday's game Dan was trying to get them to pressure them in the backcourt. One or two of them would, but Dan was going nuts, because there was an outlet guy at about center court who was completely uncovered, while our other 3 players were in the frontcourt waiting for them to bring the ball up. It just seems to me that certain parts of this team have completely quit on the team, the coach, and the season.

I realize that you guys had a bad game on Saturday; heck, the whole conference struggled. But remember, despite a rough season it was only one game. BG has always been a strong member of this conference under Dakich and I would bet they will be again. Every program goes through a few tough years.

Three losing seasons out of four is a cause for concern.

And the one winning season in that 4 wasn't like we were on the cusp of an NCAA bid or anything. We haven't had what I'd call a real successful year since 2001-2002. Incidentally that was the year I graduated. Looking back and realizing how long ago that really was makes me feel old :(

Hey, the upside to this is the similarity of burning of the African landscape in order for a fresh new beginning the next season. Ok, that analogy sucks...how bout' the ups and downs of the stock market...well that sucks too since our program is basically enronesc. Long time before we can see some improvements and success!

You're assuming that we will have another "up" fairly soon. That's a B!G assumption to be making.

Next year will be a up year! The questions is how much of an up? I think we could win 17-18 games. Akron will be real tough next year. I think we could beat most of the rest of the league next year. Half Full Thoughts versus half empty.

Well, I look at next year, I see that most everybody will be back, with Floyd, Wright (assuming he stays), and Samarco being strong perimeter players, and Marschall hopefully becoming a strong presence in the post. Beyond that, its pretty much a mystery because we haven't seen consistent production from any of other guys. If those 4 aforementioned players play strong next season that will make us good enough to beat out Fuffalo, Ohio, and maybe Miami in the East, we'll still have to contend with Kent and Akron. Nobody from the west division scares me, so if things break right we could be in line for a top 4 spot in the conference. However, a lot of things have to go right for that to happen. We don't know if Lefeld is even going to be able to play next year with his foot problems, Soler hasn't proven himself to be a consistent player yet, we don't know if Moten or Moon are going to be solid players in this league, and we don't know if Dan Dakich is still the coach that he was 4 or 5 years ago. Hopefully, the answers to most of these questions will be favorable and the team will make a comeback to respectability.
