This is almost unbelievable

Currently my mom lives in the Chicago area. About two weeks ago she said a tall guy came to her house selling knives. This guy was almost seven foot, so of course he gets the did you play basketball question. He says yes I play at UIC, and was once at Bowling Green. My mom told him she was from NW Ohio, and found out his name was none other than Scott Vandermeer. I knew UIC was know for not being the most disciplined program, but to have your seven foot center out selling knives door to door is just laughable. "Not that there's anything wrong with that" to quote Jerry Seinfeld
Vandemeer quit playing basketball

Scott quit the basketball team - that's probably why he has time to sell knives. What a waste of talent. We sure could have used him this year.

I had heard that he quit, but he is still on the roster. Didnt want to say he quit when I havnt seen anything from UIC. Thanks for the update.

So, let me get this straight. People are roasting Dakich for all of the players leaving, but then one of those kids quits another team, and it's still Dakich's fault. Can someone explain this to me. I don't know, but something isn't right here.

Do you mean he quit in Chicago, or he quit here in BG?

I thought Vandermeer was diagnosed with some sort of a heart condition after he got to UIC. Anyone remember hearing that as well? If that’s the case, I’d say he quit and transferred from BG, but was forced to stop playing once he got to UIC (even though he had to sit this year out). It’s a big difference when it comes to your heart (literally) making playing decisions for you and not your mind.

If that's the case, I retract my statement. I don't remember hearing that one.

I'll say the same as HF. I must say, though, that I have not only never read anything about Scott having heart problems, but I've never seen it mentioned here, and according to the account that has been proffered here, Scott said that he still is a member of the UIC squad.
I hope his career isn't over, no matter where he is playing. The only former BG player that I wish ill upon is Ron Lewis. That man deserves nothing.

I knew I remembered seeing the heart issue about Vandermeer posted on this board. It was posted by Collegedropout and below is what the post said. I’m not saying this is a cold hard fact, but this is what was mentioned about Vandermeer by Collegedropout, so maybe he can fill us in again on it.
Here's the post and also the link to the thread:
just a lil fyi
just little info on our former player vandermeer he is enrollerd at uic and on the team but cannot practice due to a previously unoticed heart condition I got this info from the man himself as I speak with him often. He loves the basketball team and wishes he could contribute but misses bowling green all the same he says. Just thought i would drop that knowledge on you guy as you talk about what ifs. because if he was still here we would be wasting a scollie for the next 3 years.

If he is still on the team, how is he "working" selling knives. I thought NCAA rules say that you can NOT work during the season. Was this some time ago?

Yes, I believe athletes can work in season. There is a limit on hours though. UNLV pg Greg Anthony owned a clothing business and was making over 100,000 a year from it and it was all legit. Only in Vegas.

If a seven footer showed up to my door selling knives I don't think I could say no.

It was my understanding that Greg Anthony had to turn down his athletic scholarship from UNLV in order to be able to run his business. The other guys on the team (Stacy Augmon, Larry Johnson, etc.) made their money by keeping games under the spread.
