What about Howard "Butch" Komives, who played with Nate Thurmond? They were both before my time, but I thought I remembered reading that he was the only MAC Player ever to lead the nation in scoring.

I loved Ron Harper. But some folks will recall that during that time, Ball State had a player, Dan Palumbizio (sp?), who man regarded as Harper's equal.

Urban legend: Harper won the conference MVP during the regular season. When Ball State and Miami faced off in the MAC post-season tourney, Palumbizio hit a jumper, looked at Harper and said, "we'll see who the MVP is." Harper snapped out of his stupor, the Redskins buried the Cardinals and Palumbizio faded into obscurity.

I remember watching Grant Long play, too. He was a beast.

Dayon's list looks pretty good. Thurmond clearly #1 and Harper 2. After that there could be some argument-Walter Luckett, anyone? :D

Was Eastern in the MAC when Gervin played there? I thought that came before they joined.

First game I saw in college was UT versus Eastern. Eastern was defending small college champ I think and not yet in the MAC for sure. As I recall Gervin lit us up in the first half and Hurons led by 20 or so-Rockets stormed back, Gervin got upset and refused to come back in the game. UT went on to win by ten or so. Of course the misty shrouds of time probably cloud this memory but I know Gervin was a senior and had all kinds of problems that year. He may have even been booted from the team before season's end. Eastern was not yet D1 or in the MAC.
