Another Letter in the Sentinel

There was another letter in the Sentinel Tribune tonight. Under the heading Sports Mailbag.
Letter writer wants to know real scoop on Falcon men.
This one is from Wayne Thomas, Bowling Green. He made some very good points in it. Sounds like another faithful Falcon fan who is feeling a lot of pain right now.
The couple who sits next to me at the Falcon games, always go to the MAC tournament. Last night he said he can't wait to get to Cleveland and finally see some decent basketball.
Just wondered who all saw the latest letter in the paper.

Yes and I can't wait to go to the MAC tournament either. Should be a really good tournament. Kind of makes me really mad though, considering BG probably won't be back to Cleveland for another couple of years..................

Even two weeks ago, I was optimistic that the Falcons would make it out to Cleveland, now that happening would require an upset of massive proportions. It sucks because I am initially from Strongsville, which is right by Cleveland, and I've already got tickets pegged for the semifinals and finals of the women's tournament. I'd love to have to go to the Q a day earlier to catch the men's first round, but realistically BG doesn't have much of a shot.

I hear ya. I love the MAC tournament because everyone is wearing their school's colors at the area bars, talking trash, etc. This year, it's just our team that is playing like trash. At least we have the women's team, right????

The Falcons will be in Cleveland next year! I would not be shock to see them there this year. They would be one and done in Cleveland but I think they have a shot to be there if someone is looking past them.
I will not get on this horse beating kick.

What horse? A horse would imply that the team is still alive somewhat, this team's been done and dead for weeks.

It's not really horse beating...it's just that this is ALL there is to talk about for the men's team. I wish it wasn't this way. Even if it was for one game, I would love BG to make it to Cleveland.

I'll be heading to Cleveland for the first day of the tourney, for sure. Not sure if I'll go back for the semis & finals or not, but I love the quarters. That full day of 4 games is always a blast for me.
At this point, to be quite honest, I'd just as soon BG didn't make it. I'm going to be going to Cleveland and paying to watch 4 games, and I'd rather watch good, competitive games than the crap the BG men have been putting on the court the past month or two.

I'll be there for the Saturday finals, provided the women get there... I have to student teach this week so I won't be on break to make it to the weekday games. First time I'll miss them since my freshman year, and let me tell you - I'm disappointed about not going.
But I'll be downtown in full force drinking Friday night, so give me a ring if you're near The Boneyard.

Getting back to the letter, I know Wayne Thomas and he is a HUGE Falcon fan. I know he has season tickets to basketball and goes to a lot of hockey and football games as well. He raised many valid points in his letter. That's two "Dakich needs to go" letters this week. It will be interesting if we see if anyone write in to defend him.

I think there's a decent sized group of fans that would prefer a coach with a slightly less caustic sideline demeanor. Dan's initial run was successful enough to paper over that sentiment. Who knows what impact the last few years will have. Just as being a solid guy around town has bought Dan some good will with a portion of the fan base during the down years, the up years bought him some cover from the folks who don't appreciate his temper and language.
This situation could get pretty sticky. Dan's heading into his final year, will he be willing to work as a lame duck? Krebs may be leaving, would his successor be willing to give Dan an extension or would he just let him walk if he demands an extension? I can't see Krebs giving him any additional years while he's looking at another job, that woud tie his successor's hands.
Things could get really interesting around here in the off season.

If I remember correctly - Swerline, the last Athletic Director, renewed Buddy Powers contract for five years right before he left - leaving the hockey program in a downhill spin for 4 years and a buy out of the fifth year of his contract.
Let's hope Krebs doesn't pull something like that on us.

First, is ZWERLINE! If you are going to talk about someone at least have the decency to spell their name correctly. Second, if you think Buddy Powers is the only reason the hockey team took a turn for the worse you need to learn a little bit of history. Buddy Powers is a good coach, just not the right coach for BG right now. It's not a bad thing, just not the right thing. 9 times out of 10 Paul has hired excellend coaches, and stuck with coaches he believed in. Dan Dakich is that 1 in 10 in my opinion. Some may not agree with my and that is fine. But there is no sence in dragging a person who bleeds orange and brown through the dirt. Comparing Buddy Powers to Dan Dakich is like comparing apples to oranges.

Of all the negative things that have been said over the course of this board....can I ask you to rethink that statement? I would like to think that one thing we can agree upon is the class of Paul Krebs. He is not the type of man to "pull" something. Besides, he IS one of us. He is a BGSU grad. He may stay or he may go, but I don't see him doing anything but leaving us in the best shape he can. Ron Zwerline was in over his head. Nice man, clueless AD.

Sorry about the spelling - and I agree that Krebs has made some excellent choices. He brought Miller here to coach the Falcon women.
He didn't bring Dan here in the first place - just let him come back from West Virginia with a 5 year contract.
As for Buddy - he was an excellent assistant coach here and he is a great guy with a really nice family. His kids are all really good athletes and a pleasure to have at Bowling Green High School.
