A Possible Point Guard

Post by Falcon Eddie »

Here's an Ohioan, whose head coach in high school is Nick Aloi, a former BGSU star, who is still available and is regarded as a good candidate for point guard:

East Liverpool basketball standout 6'-2" Andrew Bobalik averaged nearly 26 points per game and set the school single game record by scoring 47 points against Cleveland East Tech. He also scored 39 in leading the Potters to a victory over highly regarded Massillon Perry.

"If any college is looking for a true point guard that can also score, look no further than Andrew Bobalik." per writer Bill Greene.

Are we on this guy? Shouldn't the fact that Aloi is his high school coach give us the inside track?

This guy was Second Team All-Ohio Div. 1, so his resume sounds reputable.

Bobalik is listed on Rivals and from the sight of his picture would fit the Opie bill much more than Floyd already does

Never said he couldn't play. I'm saying we don't need another unathletic guard that would struggle offensively and defensively at the D-1 level.

I haven't seen him play, but he didn't play a high level of competition in HS and that would probably lead to your answer of why he isn't signed.

He was Division 1 in HS, how is that not a high level of competition?

Actually, East Liverpool is a D-2 school, as Bobalik was second-team All State D-2. His team won 1 game in the state tournament and lost in the District Semifinal. Again, I have not seen him play, but based on what I have gathered, he's a solid player for his region, but that does not equate automatically to NCAA Division I athleticism or skill. There's a lot of kids that can score, but can he defend and/or get his shot against kids that are just as big as he is and in this case (presumably) a lot quicker? If he is, then great, but I have my doubts. That's all I was referring to.

Here's a picture for anyone that's interested:

Per Rivals:

Andrew Bobalik is averaging 26.5 points per game this season.
"Bowling Green was close to offering this summer," Bobalik said. "I was going up there for a summer camp and I was close to signing early but then I dislocated my elbow. After that they said they wanted to see how I recovered before they offered."

An offer from Bowling Green would realize a goal for Bobalik.
"My dad went to BG and played basketball there (in the early 1970's)," he said. "I'd like to follow him there. Playing in Division I is a dream of mine."

This season has been a rebuilding year for the East Liverpool Potters who have started out at 2-6. But Bobalik has picked up where he left off, showing that he is fully recovered from the summer injury. Currently he is averaging over 26 points, five assists and five rebounds per game.

"My strengths are my penetration and using my body to shield the defenders," he said. "And my craftiness in ball handling is a strength."

I like the fact that he's crafty. If he shows some moxie, we should definitely sign him.

I don't know much about this kid, but I do know this: with this last remaining scholarship, we need to emphasize speed, quickness, and defense at the 1 spot. Our current guards have size and shooting/scoring ability, but there is an overall lack of jets. If we're looking at a 1s that isn't a waterbug, we're taking our eyes off the ball. Kashif Payne is a good example of the type of player we need to fill out our guard rotation, imho.

I based it off that...I bow to your expertise on him.

I dont understand why we just have 1 schollie left.

Minus Wright, Moon, Phillips.

Plus Polk?

You're forgetting that Phillips was a walk-on. While he may have been given use of a free scholarship at times when they weren't all taken, his departure does not free one up.

I believe the program had announced that he was given a scholarship on a permanent basis.
