Hey I was wondering what peoples views were on who would open game this year?n I also was wondering if a line up of Darryl Moten and Samarco could really up our speed (getting floyd off the court) but hurt our shooting(with darryl on the court) also if Polk Matt Marschall and Sullivan all are healthy we should be subbing in a fresh big all the time and actually have some success there this year.

Not to jump on little things, but do you mean Brian Moten or Daryl Clements when you say Darryl Moten?

Floyd will continue to get minutes as long as Dan is here, regardless of how he plays, it's a fact guys, just accept it and move on.

If I had to place money on it, I would say our starting 5 would look like:
Floyd
Nate Miller
Samarco
Marschall
Lefeld

That would effectively make us one of the least athletic teams in the MAC on paper.

I actually liked what I saw of Clements as long as he doesn't shoot, so I will go with:

Clements
Miller
Samarco
Sullivan
and take a flyer on Polk

as my starting five if I had to pick from this roster. Floyd has proven to be much more effective on the wing than as a point, so switch out Otis if you wish and we'll play small. It doesn't change the fact that there isn't a guard in the MAC that Floyd can guard without fouling, pulling the jersey and all the other usual tricks.

3 scholarships come open in March, no wait, 2 since one is earmarked for Chris Knight, if he qualifies.

*In late-breaking JJHuddle news, it appears that Artie and Dan may have been right after all taking a pass on Darryl Roberts from Toledo St. Francis.

SFS fans are saying on JJHuddle that the "education" that Coach Lowe and the SFS faithful promised Roberts apparently didn't include the ACT/SATs b/c from the looks of it, and this is from SFS people, Roberts did not qualify at Akron and his scholarship has been pulled. I don't read the MAC message boards, sorry if this old news.

An ironic day in the Diocese when Coach Suboticki and Scott HS qualify 3 kids for NCAA/JUCO ball next year and the Catholics, who so value the "education" to save the City kids, fail in this attempt.

I take offense to your generalizations. One kid that goes to a private school doesn't qualify so you make a statement like that? I think you are WAY off base and better bring some more facts to support your case.

Yes, barring injury, we're gonna see Floyd for 35 mpg, and I'll be driving 5 hours round trip to see it. It's nice that a few you guys want to say that he's "much more effective on the wing", but let's cut the crap. He leaves A LOT to be desired at either position. There are probably 8 or 9 kids right now in the Toledo City League better at either guard position.

As ever, I'm extremely eager to see our newcomers, especially Sims.

Didn't mean to offend anyone. I'm very Catholic, myself. I just get sick and tired of watching kids who have never stepped foot in a Catholic church get targeted (and I can back up that Roberts was targeted) into the "we can give you a better education" gimmick and then St. Francis and to a point, Roberts himself, blow a golden opportunity for the kid to get a real education. The education at SFS, I would argue, in many cases, is not that much different than a lot of the "city" schools. If the Catholic schools would allow the natural course of things to take care of itself, then they might be as competitive as the next guy. But to turn the CL into the recruiting battlefield it has become just to maintain and survive is an absolute joke and a major dis-service to the kids of Toledo who deserve better. If the Johnnies and St. Francis want to preach about the educational possibilities that they can afford their kids, then back it up (and the Johnnies do), but don't go out of your way (like SFS does) to target a coach (Suboticki) who's won multiple state championships for not being able to build a program b/c he didn't fit in with your image and school. At least in this year, Scott HS qualified its kids. Sorry I'm done.

I have a video of Dick Vitale speaking in front of the ABCD camp of 90 or 91 and in the speech he says "use basketball to further yourself, don't allow basketball to use you."

Fortunately, there are still a few years left for this story to have a better ending, but Darryl Roberts allowed SFS and basketball to use him for the last 4 years.

BACK TO THE ACTUAL TOPIC, BleedOrange you are absolutely correct, in that there is/are a bunch of homegrown/regional talent in the CL and other area schools that easily are more athletic, talented and some would argue a better fit for D-1 basketball than Floyd. The problem with the CL is that many of the players don't have the right hairstyles to fit into our cookie-cutter image. Also, I realized that Miller will not be eligible until Christmas, and yes, if Floyd is on the court, I would much rather have him on the wing than making the majority of the decsions and handling the ball. That being said, Ryne Hamblet could be a nice compliment to what Floyd brings and add size in a smallish backcourt.

Not disagreeing with your point on good athletic guards from the TCL and the area, but from what I remember, Floyd was the player of the year in that league his senior year and was also the district player of the year. (correct me if I am wrong, it has been a while since then) Just because a player is a star in high school doesn't mean they will produce the same results they had in high school. The player may be more suited to be a role player at the college level. The kids in the City League may be more athletic than Floyd, but that doesn't mean that they can play in the Dan Dakich system, whether it be the motion offense or the extremely hard work that a player has to do for Dan. Just remember when you talk about the players from the City League, Floyd was voted the top player in the league by the coaches his senior year. (I am not 100% sure he was the player of the year but he was at least first team for sure, and I am 100% sure that the coaches vote on the All-City teams)

I personally think that Floyd should play on the wing with Samarco and have anyone on the team that can dribble and make smart desicions play the point. Floyd, Samarco, and Marschall are probably the three locks to start. The other two for a point guard and another big guy.

No, from what I can remember, I think you're right. However, there are a few reasons to keep in mind that he ended up at Oakland too. He was the leader of a very good team that I believe advanced to the state tournament and they were highly ranked all year. I'm not saying he wasn't an effective HS player. However, I think one could argue his effectiveness and consistency in an ever more athletic MAC.

He is a good player to have on your team. He is not a good player to have to rely much on. He would be great off the bench and when he is on let him play, he can score, when he isnt let him spell someone.

Floyd will start at point. SR with experience and DD likes him. I heard, however, that his scholarship was pulled after his last encounter with the police. It was sort of “the last straw”. If it’s true will it be reinstated? My guess is yes.
Matt will start at the 5. Again SR with a great work ethic. I think toward the end of the season he will come off the bench because of his feet.
Samarco will start at the 3. Enough said.
Marshall will start at the 4 but will be replaced by Larson. I watch some of the summer work outs and Larson will be a good one.
Clements will start at the 2. Clements has really improved his game from last year.

The rest of the team:
Polk, what I have heard, wanted to red shirt this year. DD told him to “go somewhere else” if that’s what he wanted. DD wants to go out with a winning team and having a scholarship red shirt does not figure into his 1 year plan. Polk is big but that is about it for him.
Chris Knight doesn’t make sense to me if DD thinks he will be gone at the end of his contract. However, I watch Knight play and I was impressed. But what about grades?
Sims: no way. He can run and jump but that’s it. Can’t shoot mid range or 3’s and does not see the floor at all.
Guerin: best dribbler and passer on the team. Has gotten a lot bigger. But he’s a walk on. DD will find it hard to play a walk on alot over scholarship players.
Miller: This kid is unreal. I wish he could start in October. He is the one to watch!!
Moten: If it’s possible looks worse than last year. Because of the other players recruited he needs to get his seat at the end of the bench and get comfortable.
Sullivan: will be a great addition to this team. It seems to me that he is out of shape which I know DD will handle.
Larson will be good. Will start sometime in the middle of the season
Radivojevic Needs to look up the word “pass” and get more weight on
Hamblet has got to get stronger.
The nice thing about this team is that if Lefeld and/or Marshall get into foul trouble we have some big guys to come in unlike last year.

I would be surprised if DD has given up on getting a contract extension.
