It's basketball...freshmen make major contributions all the time.MatelaAntwerp wrote:He also has a dream of playing in one of the major conferences......He and Ron Lewis should get a room.
By the way i think it is comical that OSU is returning 2 decent players and ranked 4th in the country. Are college coaches clueless?
You are telling me that there are not 12 teams returning better talent than OSU has?hammb wrote:It's basketball...freshmen make major contributions all the time.MatelaAntwerp wrote:He also has a dream of playing in one of the major conferences......He and Ron Lewis should get a room.

OSU won't be that good early, but if all their freshmen gel they could be scary good come tourney time. The real question is why they're ranked #4 and Oden is likely not even going to be playing until sometime in January.
The ranking is not who has the best returning talent. The ranking is who has the best talent period (at least in theory). OSU added the #1 recruit who was a stone cold lead pipe lock to be the #1 overall player picked in the NBA draft, if not for a new rule. That player was also a center and even mediocre centers can dominate college ball.MatelaAntwerp wrote:You are telling me that there are not 12 teams returning better talent than OSU has?hammb wrote:It's basketball...freshmen make major contributions all the time.MatelaAntwerp wrote:He also has a dream of playing in one of the major conferences......He and Ron Lewis should get a room.

(*-Unless they play at Kentucky.hammb wrote:That player was also a center and even mediocre centers can dominate college ball.
Have you seen Oden play? He has no offensive post game. He is athletic so I dont doubt he will be great but he is very overhyped right now.hammb wrote:The ranking is not who has the best returning talent. They also added a few other top level recruits...at least one of whom might've been a potential lottery pick if not for the new rule changes.
There are not that many teams that have that kind of talent on their team. Obviously they have not played yet, and I personally expect them to struggle early and that ranking will go down. Towards the end of the season, however, it would not surprise me if they end up in the final 4 or elite 8.
The biggest contribution Oden will give to OSU is the fact that his commitment there convinced other solid players to commit as well.TG1996 wrote:(*-Unless they play at Kentucky.hammb wrote:That player was also a center and even mediocre centers can dominate college ball.)
The funniest part of the Oden to Ohio State dealie is the OSU fan I work with that's convinced he'll be there for four years, much less two.
I only saw Oden play in the games that were televised on ESPN last year. He is mighty impressive defensively, and you're right he's got very little offensive game. But all HS post players lack a solid post game...they've never needed it in HS, so they don't learn it. The kid is a great athlete and I think he'll already dominate on the defensive end. Thad Matta is a terrific coach and I think he'll be able to get a lot out of him.MatelaAntwerp wrote: Have you seen Oden play? He has no offensive post game. I never said "friends". I said "co-workers".hammb wrote:To TG's OSU friends: they're retarded. No way Oden is there 4 years, and I think it'd be a major upset if he were there 2. The ONLY reason he is there at all is the new NBA rule requiring him to attend 1 year of college.
Completely agree with everything you said. I live in Columbus and I get to hear about it every time OSU gets ranked above where they should be. Apparently the football progosticators were right.hammb wrote:I only saw Oden play in the games that were televised on ESPN last year. I agree that Oden is currently overrated, but it is an undeniable fact that he would've been the #1 overall pick in the NBA draft. So long as the injury doesn't curtail him, I'd be shocked if he weren't the #1 overall pick in next year's NBA draft.
I agree that they are probably overrated right now, but I think they'll be a pretty good team by tourney time. The people doing the voting are buying into the hype of the great talent they have, but they are still a lot of freshmen that will take time to learn the game. Look at Kansas or UNC last year...pretty poor early in the year, but good by year's end. When Syracuse won the title they weren't very good at all early on, but obviously they won it all at the end. Young teams can be among the top 5 in the country, but generally they don't hit their stride until Jan/Feb. No way OSU is top 5 right now, but I think the coaches are (for some reason) voting on where they think they'll be at the end of the year.
