Potential...
I saw a lot of potential tonight!
I saw a young man with a body-of-which the MAC rarely sees in Otis Polk. He had a couple of smooth post moves, and is just destined to become a great one I think.
I saw Ryne Hamblet step up and hit open jumpers AND create some shots for himself. That could be huge... having a second or third option on the floor at the end of a close game drawing some defenders away from Samarco.
Martin was lights-out. He will lead the MAC in scoring... could he lead the nation?
Sims showed potential too. We were struggling to start the game until he came in and injected some energy into the game.
We have some real solid athletes... we have some scorers... will we have a team? Give them some time and I think it could happen!
I'm feeling pretty excited! There will be ups and downs this season, to be sure, but I think the ups should be pretty darned fun!

Hamblet quote...

Oh me likey also, Im a big fan of Hamblet, we havent had a true PG since pardon and Hamblet looks like he could be of the best pgs in the MAC. The MAC has made a big mistake by picking us last in our conference, our opponents are going to be caught off guard big time by our athletic and talented team. go bg!!!!

We are going to need someone to pick up all of the jocks left on the floor after Hamblet fakes out his defenders. The dude is so quick and can put up a trey in an flash.edr4225 wrote:ZiggyZoomba wrote:Hamblet quote...

I like that steak comes from cows. That is why a cow will not think twice about eating you.
I agree. From watching the scrimmages I thought Miller & Sullivan were going to be the best of the new faces. Some people liked Marschall last year, but from what I saw Sullivan looked like a better PF already (is that depth!?!?).factman wrote:Grant-
I agree with everything you said, PLUS, we didn't see the BEST two newcomers (in my opinion) tonight, in Miller and Sullivan. I think we have a lot of depth and some outstanding athletes this year.
Miller was the best player in the scrimmages not named Samarco. The kid is built like a truck and is very adept at using his size and strength to get rebounds and bang in close to the basket.

Now this is some great stuff to read! So does it look like we will be able to effectively run a motion offense with Hamblet at PG? If so, I am very, VERY excited for the upcoming year!

Nobody said that, did they!?Bleeding Orange wrote:Now this is some great stuff to read! So does it look like we will be able to effectively run a motion offense with Hamblet at PG? If so, I am very, VERY excited for the upcoming year!
Our offensive scheme last night was still pretty shaky, especially early. We had 9 points with 10:30 to go in the first half, and that includes a breakaway layup by Samarco on the opening tip. We were able to get LeFeld in the post early on, and that is obviously a mismatch against a DIII school (although he didn't dominate down there like I would've hoped).
After that point though, the offense did look to actually have some continuity. Clements & Hamblet made some nice passes to an inside cutter. The thing I didn't like about that was that it seemed Samarco was the only guy who was cutting towards the basket to receive those passes. Perhaps that was by design, but it would've been nice to see a guy like Sims, Clements, or Hamblet also showing the ability to cut for an easy bucket. Perhaps they'll grow into that as the season goes on.
Still the biggest reason for our offensive improvement was we just flat out couldn't miss a jump shot in the second half. Yes, a lot of them were wide open looks. Still you cannot expect to shoot 66% from 3 point range very often.
Last night was encouraging, but we're still a work in progress. Don't get expectations too high at this point. Hamblet/Clements definitely gave us more at the point than we've had in years though, which is a nice sign. I'm still no fan of the motion offense, but that is what it is. Capital did a very nice job executing their offense and getting a lot of easy looks last night...I would much prefer a more structured style of offense, but that's a personal preference.
There is definitely talent on this team, but I still think it'll be awhile before we become a good team. Playing a lot of lower tier D1 competition this year is probably a good thing. The team will not be rolling over totally outmatched teams, but at the same time they are winnable games. I look forward to watching this team grow, because there is definitely some good young talent here.

Although I saw potential in a few players I saw no potential in this team. We have to remember we played a team last night that does not feature one D1 player and we were down for much of the first half. Capital even had a losing record last year at the D3 level. I am sorry but we will have to see much improvement for us to compete with any D1 teams and win. The one thing that I noticed throughout this game that it alomost seemed Capital was taking this as an exhibition game and we were not. Capital got everyone in the game in the first half and let all of their guys get some playing time whereas we did not get everyone in the game unti the last 2 minutes. That was just something I noticed from the game.
