Potential Coaching Canidates???

With my dream hire of Bob Huggins at KSU now, who are some coaches we would like to see? Do we hire from within with Coach Stone or do we try to go elseware, and if so where? And yes i think we had this convo at the end of last year but with moves made and with "many" new "athletic" players is our job more/less desireable? How big of a name could we really possibly get?

I don't keep up in the coaching circles much, so I don't really know any names.

My dream hires would be an assistant from Roy Williams or Tom Izzo. I love watching both of their teams play, and I love their styles. If they had a young assistant that has bought into their philosophy, I'd love to bring them in.

Of course their top assistants likely already make more than our head coaching job would, so we're looking further down the bench than that.

After Antonio Daniels, he's the best PG that I've seen at BG.

David Greer could play the game! I watched him play all four years of my tour of duty at BG. Although he only stood about 5'8". he had the biggest thighs of any guy I can remember.

I had some extra time in the last few weeks and have been saving my list for a time just like this, so here we go:

-BG Ties
David Greer, Wayne State, as mentioned, my biggest complaint is that he doesn't necessarily "recruit" his athletes, they kinda show up and they are somewhat recruited, could he make the switch to D-1?

Greg Kampe, Oakland, has given Dakich his headaches over the years and actually has a NCAA Tournament win to his credit albeit in a play-in game, but hey it counts. Biggest complaint, he gave John Floyd a D-1 scholarship, but so did Dan, so he can't be all bad. A lot of people in BG have an unfavorable taste in their mouth regarding Kampe's personality from what I'm told. Not exactly the first guy that you would invite over for a beer, beyond that I know very little about him, but that's what I hear.

Steve Merfeld, Evansville, also a head coach and absolutely got jobbed when the Morgantown Experiement fell through. He too has a NCAA Tournament win and has since struggled to find the athletes in Southern Indiana that he had at Hampton. Coached under Larranaga and could be looking to get out of Evansville quickly.

David Hoover, Retired Teacher and Coach at Canton McKinley High School. Before you jump all over me, he won 3 state championships at two different schools and if you coach at Canton McKinley, you know how to recruit. He had something like 8-10 kids go D-1 his last two years. Namely Raymar Morgan, who now starts for Tom Izzo at Michigan State as a freshman. Mr. Hoover has a tremendous winning percentage, is a winner and a BG Alum.

John Grobe, Top OSU Assistant, he's probably out of our price range
Geno Ford, Head Coach Muskingum, bald guy from Kent State's staff 2-3 years ago and one of the all-time leading prep scorers in Ohio.

Cuonzo Martin, Top Purdue Assistant, Mr. Christopher knows him well.
Keyna Hunter, Top Xavier Assistant
Reggie Rankin, Dayton Assistant
Patrick Sandle, Pittsburgh Assistant

Jay Price, Illinois Assistant

Mike Leaf, Winona (Minnesota) State Head Coach, will probably win back to back D-2 titles this year with top ranked club.

Rick Herdes, Southern Indiana, solid coach built perennial D-2 power in Hoosier state.

Ron Hunter, Head Coach at IUPUI, coaches Austin Montgomery, what a joy that must be!

And if we can dig back into the memory bank for two more, some of my personal favorites:

-Larry Hunter, Western Carolina, is absolutely rebuilding horrible program after wrongly being ousted at OU(MAC experience) by recruiting Ohio kids (Got two from D-4 state champion South Webster and one from Canton McKinley last year alone).

-Pete Gillen, currently working for CSTV, (thank you Insight Cable) and was fired at Virgina after building a solid program that was never going to fully compete in the ridiculous ACC and winning at Xavier before anyone won there.

Good stuff. I have some random thoughts:

Another problem with Greer is that his record at Wayne State just isn't that good. He has gone something like 79-62 and has never finished higher than 3rd in his league.

As far as I know, Steve Merfeld's only tie to BG is his years as an assistant under Coach L. He grew up in Minnesota. I'm not sure why he'd leave Evansville to come here.

Kampe is a proven D1 coaching mediocrity. We could pass on him.

Geno Ford was an excellent, tough point guard for Ohio U during the mid 90's. He's an interesting prospect. What's his record up there?

Cuonzo Martin? He's still pretty young, isn't he? It seems like he was a player at Purdue not that long ago.

Larry Hunter put some excellent talent on the floor at OU. He'd be a solid choice. His teams never seemed particularly hungry, however.

Pete Gillen, however, is by far my favorite name on that roster. Wow! It would be great to have him.

I really think that this a realistic list for the most part of guys that we have a shot at.

My personal wish list would start with Gillen or Larry Hunter and inclue Ford Hoover, Montgomery and Pooh Williamson.

But I wouldn't argue if we ended up with Merfeld, Watkins, Sandle, Martin, Herdes or Leaf either.

I'm not sure he'd be all that quick to get out of Evansville. He's turned them around so far this year, and the MVC seems to get more love come tourney time than the MAC, something which he witnessed first-hand a couple of times at BG.

(Also, I love having a former BG guy on the bench at Evansville, it gives me something to point out to the future Mrs. who's a UE grad. )

What is Rich Walker up to? Tim Buckley, former Ball State coach, has taken Walker's place on Alford's staff at Iowa.

My mom watches a lot of college basketball. I think she would be a good candidate, but she wouldn't throw her name around while BG still has a coach in place. She has integrity.

Here is the bio on Geno Ford from the Muskingum College website. I would love to see him roaming the sidelines in Anderson Arena. As a high school student at Meadowbrook, I was lucky enough to watch his entire college career. Then I followed him through college. When he and Gary Trent hooked up you knew you were going to get beat most of the time. He is a hard-nosed, fundamentally based coach. EXACTLY what BG needs. One of his biggest assets is his father, Gene Ford. The man lives, eats, and breathes fundamental basketball. He is one of the best coaches in the state of Ohio. His experience will help as well. He does not have a large budget at Muskingum, and will stretch it as far as possible. He has been pretty successful as a head coach and knows the MAC from the players point of view AND the coaches perspective. He is young and would be one to stay and not run for the money, not that we know what that is like. Low blow, but I could not resist. He married my cousin actually. So I may be a bit biased. However, his record stands on its own.
