I took my media guide to lunch with me today and learned something I hadn't realized before.

If Anthony Stacey hadn't been granted a medical red shirt his Jr. year he would not be BG's all-time leading scorer. Keith McLeod would be instead.

Stacey played 5 games his "first" Jr. year and scored 62 points during those games. He had 1938 total points in his 4+ year career. Keith had 1895 points in 4 seasons... just 43 less than Stacey.

Interestingly enough, the 3rd all-time scoring leader, Howard Komives, had 1834 points in THREE seasons (from the era when freshmen didn't play).

Just found those facts to be interesting. Carry on.

There was not a three point basket in Komives' day, either.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Keith also missed 8 games or so at the beginning of his freshman year. So I'm pretty sure that he played in 12-15 less games in his career than Stacey.

Komives had 844 points his senior year... in 23 games. WOW!! Yeah, that's 36.7/game!

I have always thought that Komives would have averaged 5-10 points more per game with the 3pt shot, as at LEAST a third of his shots came from outside. He was also a tremendous foul shooter, making 50+ in a row at one time.

Komives may very well be the best basketball player in BG history.

He would've made 5-10 threes a game? If that's the case, coming from someone who never saw him play, that's impressive.

Komives may very well be the best scorer in BG history, but I would contend that Thurmond is the best basketball player in BG history.

He could score, and rebound (set an NCAA tourney single game record), and he could defend- I read that both Chamberlin and Russell listed Big Nate as the toughest defender they faced in their playing days.

That is unreal what Komives accomplished in less games and no 3 pt shot!

I like the name Butch better than Howie. As for greatest: Gotta go with Jeff Montgomery, Skip Howard and Cornelius Cash. A three for one deal.

That class was rated in the Top Ten in the nation. Never really panned out to be that great as Howard disappointed in a big way. I think there was also a 6'11" transfer from MAryland that played with that group who never really amounted to much either. Cash was very good and Montgomery was the best basketball player ever when a ratio of basketball ability to athletic ability was figured into the equation. My all-time most annoying Falcon!Although Grant has fouled me pretty aggregiously in pickup games back in the day!

That's for sure! Yes Nate was great but he also played against much smaller players many nights. Butch was doubled many nights and still threw in 30+. His NBA career was less steller.

The big kid was Mark Cartwright. That Falcon team lost the MAC title in the last game of the season to a CMU team that featured Ben Poquette, James McElroy and Dan Roundfield.
