BG 49 OU 67 I went to the game, it was ugly

Made the trip over to OU tonight and saw an ugly game that made me beleive this team is not very good. Any analysis is tough when the team shoots so poorly but I will try to give my take on the game as many of you have given yours for previous games We shot 13% from deep and 32% from the field. Looked sloppy all game, with 21 turnovers and this was to a team that had very little quality guard play tonight.
My thoughts on the individuals.
Samarco...Off night but you could see his scoring ability. Never had an open shot save a couple of threes in the corner that came no where near going in . He forced a ton of shots, lollygagged back on d a bunch of times and is not anywhere near a complete player. I bow to everyone who said he lacked rebounding and defensive abilities.
Miller....Great for any team. Our second best player. Can rebound well and does all of the utility things you want from a guy. A solid number 3 and will be out 3 for the next 3 years.
Guerin....put him on scholarship today. He is the only player on the team we can run an offense with...he rebounds like a player 5 inches taller just because he is so active. He is the only person on this team who can adequately handle the basketball. He shoots well also. He is a defensive liability because of his lack of quickness and size but that was not a problem today. We did not talk on Defense as a team and it lead directly to him being picked about 75 feet from the basket and laid out by the PF from OU atleast 3 times. That is something simple. It is coaching
Marschall....played well in his few minutes....he is active and should be atleast an adequate 4 for the next 3 years.
Polk.....I think Polk played his most minutes tonight and he looked solid. He cant play with Leon Williams yet but he got some boards and was actve on D. Could play well with Marschall if Marschall can be an offensive presence.
Hamblet/Sims/Moten/Clements/Bland.....they could have worn one jersey for the effect they had on tonight's game.
Dusan..nothing special.
Larson...looks awkward on the court so far.
Dan Dakich: It should be the end for him. I like the man, I like the coach I hate the offense and we don't have anyone who can score beyond Samarco. I challenge anyone to name one time that our offense has ever hit a man for an easy basket. The offense gets no one open, EVER and they have run it for atleast 5 years....since I was in school last. It did not get people open then, and it doesn't now. Our players have to resort to one-on-one play in order to score....we do not play team offensive baskteball. We pass the ball around the top of the key, get it near the post and then just runa round until we turn it over or we have to throw up a low percentage shot. We never hit an open man cutting to the basket. We rarely ever hit an open man behind the arc...from what I saw tonight....this may also be because we just dont have shooters....Moten, Clements, Sims and Hamblet looked like average guards, they did not have good ball handling ability, all passed up wide open looks on the perimeter or when they would actually shoot, threw up an awkward looking shot that came no where near going in.

To make matters worse, the OU student newspaper is adept at matching up photos with stories.
Wait, I mean they're
not.

Just from looking at the box score, our motion offense is not going to be productive when we only have 6 assists on 17 made fgs. We're also not going to beat anybody when Samarco goes 4-20. This team still lacks distributors. That's a pretty glaring deficiency in this style of offense. I'd love for us to actually recruit a legit D-1 point guard at some point.
Like people said in the prediction thread, this team will hopefully come together by the tourney. Maybe this is still a bad team that just got exposed, or maybe we're a decent team that just had a bad night. We won't know for another month what we have here. This was basically the second game of the year, since the OOC schedule was pretty much a bunch of exhibitions.

I agree with all of that. It was 20-5 at one point and we could not do anything. No BG player on the court looked special. Miller was close. Samarco was forcing everything.....we need someone to be a threat from behind the arc. From Hamblets stats he looks like an ideal guy, big for D, a great outside shooter and decent rebounder. He looked average tonight and Guerin saw the most time at the point.

And you should be so very proud. Now what happened against Marshall again?

Last night's result was a little disappointing, but I was actually a little impressed that we only lost by 18. We shot the ball very poorly, turned it over way too much, and committed even more fouls than usual. Just a bad night overall. We had one of those days at OU last year and lost by 40. I'm looking forward to Sunday to see how the boys bounce back.

Sounded like a tough night. It was one game. BG beat Marshall, who beat OU by 10. Go figure.
We do need additional scorers though. We really do.
Akron is gonna be a challenge.

They are keeping stats like they were exhibitions not too..

It will likely be fixed, but so you know....all of the ooc stats dissapeared on BGSUfalcons.com

My thoughts exactly. This was ONE game. Nobody thought we were going to go undefeated in MAC play. This was a tough game, on the road, against probably the best team in the conferance. We lost by 18, but we also had a very poor shooting night. When you rely on the 3, like our team does, when shots aren't falling you are going to have bad nights. I think we started 0-15 from beyond the arc.
I'm not going to be discouraged by a road loss against a top team in the conference. Here's to bouncing back and winning the ever important conference home game against Akron. That will not be easy because Akron is also very tough.
Put it this way...If we can protect home court on Sunday, and OU drops their game to Kent, we are back tied for first.
Remember, we are starting off the year with our toughest games. I'm willing to wait this thing out and see what our conference record is at the end of the season heading into the tournament.
Also, we only had 12 minutes out of Marschall who is still on the road to getting back full strength.
Go Falcons!
Sorry for the long winded post.

PLEASE, SOME OF YOU STOP ALREADY! It is one game, it was a conference road game, and teams are not going to play their best every night. I reall understand the comment that if Samarco doesn't play well, then the rest of the team is going to struggle offensively. I really do. But this team is young, they are going to take some time to figure out what it's going to take to win a tough conference road game, and as much as some of you want to blame it on DD, the kids are the only one's that can learn that. I'm going through the same thing this year, and every time you think that they've learned from the past, the same things creep up again. To be honest with you, all I want to see is improvement througout the conference season, and making it to the postseason. And if this young team does that, then I would give Coach Dakich a one year extension to see if there is more improvement. Let's just see what happens in the next game. If the kids bounce back and get a W, then this season is going to have ups and downs all year possibly.

I agree with most everything. But here are some corrections: Bland and Hamblet got picked off not Guerin. Guerin is #10 if that helps.
As far as Guerin playing D he shut down Bubba to only 3 points. This guy was ave 16 points/game.
Here’s some stats that some of you might find interesting!
In the first 2 conference games Hamblet/Dusan/Moton/Lefield/Sims/Clements/Bland are a combined 6 for 28 from the field (21%), for a total of 16 points, 0 for 12 from 3’s (0%), 4 for 5 for FT (80%). They have a total of 17 rebounds, 3 assists, and 16 turnovers and represent over 31% of our total playing time/game.
In contrast our walk-on Guerin has 18 points, 5 for 7 from the field (71.5%) 4 for 5 from 3’s (80%) 4 for 6 FT (60%). He has a total of 7 rebounds, 12 assists, and 4 turnovers.
Considering he handles the ball the most to have only 4 TO’s is amazing. So the down side for him is he needs to do is shoot more.
With Marshall/Hamblet/Samarco/Miller/Guerin on the floor playing TEAM BALL they should be a tough team to beat.

Yes, there have been broad based conclusions from this one game.
There are more systematic problems that have been present all year, and these problems were magnified Thur night. Samarco is taking a very high % of our shots. We are completely dependent on Samarco when we don't need to be. As Samarco goes, so does our team. At OU, Samarco didn't have open looks but kept shooting anyway. There have been many games were he tries to do too much on the floor, and often times gets into situations that he can't finish.
Samarco is our leader and best scorer, but this team must learn to depend on other scorers if it is going to be a
good team. I do think that this team has plenty of other capable scorers. We should NEVER have a guy go 4-20 and 1-10 from the arc.
