Merfeld resigns at Evansville

Former BG assistant Steve Merfeld resigned today. I could never quite get a grasp on UE's season this year. They won a bunch of games, gave Butler a good push on the road, but then lost some ugly ones, too.

He's likely mostly noted for being the first member of Coach L's staff to make a splash at the NCAA Tournament, when he led Hampton to a first round win over Iowa State in 2001.

Of course, the obvious question is: will he have any interest in the BG opening?

I wouldn't mind seeing him land here.

its a no brainer that this conversation should atleast occur.

Nice timing for both.

He has said so. I don't know why, but he's said it on a number of occasions to people I know well. He has no desire to coach at BGSU. I suppose that could change, but that was the feeling I got from those close to him.

I fear that the BGSU job won't be a highly attractive position. We will be challenged to find someone who thinks he can win and move up here.

Really? I think it's an attractive job...Larranaga did OK after leaving and Dan did land a high major job before giving it back.

I think there are enough bright assistants and head coaches in division 1 (and lower) who are looking for a step up to ensure a decent pool of applicants.

Of course...we don't have an opening here presently....

Thats why I think we should go with a coach from a non Division 1 school. Lets look at their overall job performance and not limit ourselves. We had a list going earlier with some good candidates who have D1 experience but are currently not at that level. Lets really shake some things up and see what happens. We might just throw a yatzee.

Steve wouldn't have left Evansville in the middle of his contract to come here for less pay etc......

He resigned yesterday from Evansville, is available, and I am sure would come here in a heartbeat.

It would not be Steve Merfeld, Conzo Martin from Purdue will get the first offer.
