Dakich in verse

A tribute to Coach Dan Dakich
You came from the Indiana Hoosiers
ripe with news ideas and plans
And your tenure left an indelible mark
on Bowling Green basketball fans
When fans came to Anderson Arena
they knew what they were in for
A team that reflected its coach
and left everything on the floor
There are too many memories to rehash
that fans won’t soon forget
From game-winning shots by McLeod
to Stacey’s toughness and grit
Wearing your sports coat backwards
is now a part of Falcon lore
As are the countless games that ended
with students rushing the floor
Among the clueless officiating ranks
you likely won’t be missed
And you were a refreshing thorn in the side
to arrogant Commissioner Chryst
Malcontents in the program
quickly incurred your wrath
And many gave up and quit
preferring an easier path
Those who stayed, went to class and were able
to effectively shoulder the load
Learned the values instilled by you
will pay dividends down the road
You’ve produced over a dozen professionals
more than many coaches can say
Including one special player
seeing time in the NBA
You were always relentlessly pushing
to make your players better
And you earned a spot in heaven
for putting up with Kevin Netter
The team was twice NCAA worthy
and the snubs that soon did follow
Remain blatantly unfair
and a bitter pill to swallow
You connected with the Bowling Green culture
like few have ever done
And your commitment to community service
was truly second to none
And when a former player
was wrought with personal strife
You invited him into your home
and helped turn around his life
Thank you coach, and please
do remember as you leave BG
You will be greatly missed
and a Falcon you’ll always be
