BG needs a real big man scoring threat......

Thats been our real true underlying problem for eons. We've never had a serious big man threat inside scoring wise. Lefled didn't give us that, neither did all the 6'11 guys we had when AD was here, and neither sadly does Polk. He's a nice big body to alter shots and get a few blocks but I don't see Polk becoming a real scoring threat inside. To win championships you need at least one big man talent that can score inside. We've never had that hence we've never sniffed the NCAA's.

Nate Thurmond, thats been it in this department.

In the MAC you will not find a whole lot of big men scoring threats. Most centers that come to the MAC/BG are very raw, or are just average players. You could even go as far as to say around the country big centers are not great scoring threats and are few and far between if they are. The last four MAC tournament champions have played with centers that are 6'8" or shorter, with the biggest scoring threat being Anthony Kahn at 13ppg.

Right now, we need a coach before we need anything else.

If you're talking about true scoring threats from the Center spot, I agree with the masses that it is nearly impossible to get those guys at the MAC level, and if you do they were so raw coming out of HS they are not good until their Junior year.

That being said, athletic power forwards that can score seem to be in good supply at the MAC level and they are also a valuable commodity we haven't really had. Marschall can score some, but he's not real athletic, and he certainly cannot defend the post.

FWIW, I think Polk CAN develop into a scoring threat. He'll never give you 20 ppg, but 10+ would not surprise me. He's strong, surprisingly quick, and he's just BIG. I don't think there are many centers in the MAC that will be able to deny him position. Given that he's physically gifted enough to get position down low it's just a matter of teaching him the footwork that's required of the position. Perhaps he'll never learn it, but he is no more raw than Kent's Edwards was, and he became a legit threat by the time he graduated.

This team needs a PG, plain & simple. They haven't had one in 5 years and until they get one they will not be a legitimate threat in the conference.

I dont think we need a true point guard. I think what we need is a group of players who dont turn the ball over. A true point guard would go a long way to lead to this, but seasoned players tend to be the same. If we could get a similar performance to Hamblet at the other guard spot, with limited turnovers we could be fine. Heck, maybe we can even run the offense thru Miller (although I think that he is most effective moving without the ball and cleaning things up because of his hustle plays).

As far as Big men go. I dont think you can get a legit scorer with all the tools you want in college very often, but Len Matela was very good. Ideally we would have a Freshmen C like Polk develop behind a veteran and be able to take over as a Junior and be a stud.

So what are you trying to say?

Gary Trent was great one of the best MAC players of all time, but graduated 13 years ago making my few and far between a valid statement . He was also 6'8" or under.

Mike Williams was a 6'8" 200 pound swingman, Anthony Kahn was the center on that Western Michigan team, as stated above in the first post I made.

Chris Kaman was a dominant center who could really score. Hands down.

Brandon Hunter was a beast as well. Also 6'8", also never won a MAC championship which was also a point I was making by saying a low post scoring threat is not going to get you to the NCAA's

Leon William His highest scoring average has been 14, when they won it he averaged 11. Again he is 6'8"

John Edwards, averaged 13 points a game one season.

Len Matela. Great in the post. Could score well, but again did not play in the NCAA's.

The person that tries to argue that MAC centers are often serious scoring threats that will get you to the dance need to do some research or just pay attention to the MAC season. But the person who tries to argue Mike Williams as a center, well, I just don't know what to say.

I agree with commonsense. True scoring Centers are very few & far between in the MAC...hell throughout most of college basketball.

Low post scoring in the MAC is generally by athletic 6-7 to 6-9 PFs.
