News link on potential head Coach

Post by orangeandbrown »

Apparently, Illinois Assistant and former Purdue assistant Jay Price is in the mix. (Scoll down...)

As we will all find out out for the better or for the worse in the next few days or weeks, names just don't accidently get floated. If you all recall the Nick Saban to Alabama fiasco in football, that was all done to gauge interest through the media. I was half-joking and half-wishing for one of my names by mentioning him in my list and thanked my lucky stars that Northern Illinois went a different direction, but I will be very disappointed if Pete Gillen is not at least contacted by BGSU following the news stories of his apparent interest in the NIU job. Most of his success has came in the state of Ohio and he would be a great presence on the sideline that would be a suitable replacement for such a well-liked past coach, in Dakich. Gillen, too would be that type of an endearing man for our program.

One way or another, for recruiting purposes, you would hope that something starts to spin this week as several of the supposed key players are now available:

-Mark Montgomery, Michigan State
-Jay Price, Illinois
-Cuonzo Martin, Purdue
-Chris Mack, Xavier
-Josh Oppenheimer, Kent
-Pete Gillen, formerly of Virginia

I think that when he made his statement, GChris said something like "this is going to take some time," so it might be wise to temper their time expectations.

I love both of those guys. Problem is, David Greer's track record just isn't that good. LaMonta Stone is a killer recruiter, but he's very young and inexperienced for be a head coach.

I too would love to see Pete Gillen at BG. I hope it's not just a pipe dream.

What about Greg Kampe up at Oakland or the head coach at Findlay? Would either one of them be in the mix?

Stone is a very interesting pick. However, I have to wonder if GC will be going with a clean house or not.

LaMonta is 40. I think DD was 34 when he was hired? LaMonta would be good, but it seems like Christopher could want to make this "his hire".

Pete Gillen is way too expensive for BG.

Oh! I happily stand corrected. :)

Ron Niekamp

Post by doughash »

I know there is some interest in Ron Niekamp of Findlay, he has a great resume, but his career is winding down and I don't know if this is a jump he wants to make at this point in his career. FWIW he is a Miami grad.

If he made such a statement, could that mean that he is looking at a top assistant from one of the programs that is still competing or just finished this past weekend? If so, that would explain why the Illinois and Purdue assistant's were/are in the mix.

I also think we need to "look outside the box" of possible assistant's. Are there any high profile coaches not coaching that just want to get back in to the game? Are there any coaches at other "mid-majors" or smaller mid-majors looking for a more competitive environment? Thinking that a Purdue or Illinois guy will be hired was like thinking that Krebs only wanted OSU people. Meyer was a GA at OSU when Krebs was there, but they didn't know each other. Ron Z had no ties to Indiana or Bob Knight when he hired Dakich, etc. Taking a look at the best candidates available (and there are many), is the right move and taking ones time is the right move.

Or could he be looking to move Curt Miller into the men's head coaching position? (I know that is a wild thought).

I'd take Majerus if he wanted to get back into it. I'd wheel Wooden out there in a wheel chair if he wanted to coach us for a year or two.

I think we should take out a HUGE loan and offer insane money to Tubby Smith. Kentucky fans seem to hate him because he's black, but he's a damn good coach. Perhaps if we threw a ton of cash at him he'd rather get back to less of a pressure cooker? ;) I know, it's a total pipe dream, I'm just sayin'...

I still remember when Majerus was at Ball State and he pulled his team off the floor in protest of... SOMETHING... who knows what. He's got a good coaching mind, had a great run at Balls Tate, a good run at Utah. His health would probably be a concern though, and I don't know if he even wants to coach again.
