Having the son of a great big-time coach is wonderful... until he brings the "big time" to your campus.

Tony,

Some of the comments that follow the article are downright NASTY...not saying they're untrue, but race related stuff always seem to "up the ante" when it comes to what are supposed to be discussions on the net. As to whether BSU should be penalized again, there should be no question...how can the SAME group of coaches make the SAME "mistake" twice in 2 yrs?

BSU is a joke

I love the fact they lied and tried to cover it up. Their AD also states it was a minor bump in the road. What a joke!

The MAC always was better than this. Lately this is not the case.

I didn't even check the comments, Den. Looks like they pulled them.

Although if they're anything like the comments that follow most stories in the Indy paper, I can only imagine what you got to read. :(

As for the story itself, that's what I can't figure... when does a series of annual "minor" mistakes become something major?

Remember when Ball State was awesome?? Paris McCurdy, Billy Butts, Chandler Thompson, one alley-oop away from beating UNLV and making it to the Elite 8.... now their program is the laughing stock and the shame of the MAC.

Agreed. The comments in the Indy Star can be brutal.

I remember those days vividly. Ball State has put some good teams on the floor since then, also. There was a time when Ball State had a good basketball reputation and a modicum of national respect. Tragically, whatever good that might have remained that period has been completely burned away over the past few years. BSU basketball is back at square one.

The 1989-90 Ball State Cardinals were arguably one of the best MAC teams ever, of any sport. UNLV was the number one team in the country and BSU's two point loss was just a remarkable game. UNLV easily won the next three games by like 15 points on average including blowing out Duke in the finals.
What fun it was to watch Rick Majerus weeble-wobble up and down the bench before always providing an entertaining press conference. Following his departure Dick Hunsaker, and his name was appropriate, bought or brought, actually both, continued success for a couple of years before he had to resign in shame for mis-dealings, so this is just history repeating itself in Muncie.

Things just keep getting stranger in Muncie.

Apparently, some harassing notes with racial slurs were found in the basketball offices. In response, the President is prepared to send the entire athletic department into some type of quasi-therapy session:

This comes on the heels of a local columnist ripping the AD over the plight of the basketball program.

I checked out their message board and someone cited Toledo as an example of how things could be worse.

And you ain't just whistlin' Dixie, either! ;)

Interesting news... maybe I'll have to tune into the local TeeVee station to see what they know. Or make some phone calls. :-D

Uh...yeah.

From Ray's page:

Sources inside the Ball State community confirm that the list of NCAA violations committed by Thompson in his relatively short term as coach – he was hired in April of 2006, just fifteen months ago – is already eight pages long.
