Do sports in generally "really matter"? The soap opera surrounding it is what draws us in. This is just part of that soap opera. And it would be interesting to know how far our AD went in finding the right candidate.

Personally I think all the BS that surrounds sports is simply that...BS. I like watching 2 teams play basketball for a win, not listening to all the politics.

These answers have been an incredible forum for us as fans to better understand the inner workings of your job and the athletic department. The window into your office is beneficial for everyone involved and allows the flock to better understand and therefore endorse the decisions you make. I think that coach Orr was absolutely a fabulous choice for head coach and I look forward to this year and beyond. I am curious as to who else was interviewed during the process and why coach Orr stood out above them for the current climate at BG.

Yup. Disrespectful of just about everyone involved.

I'm mildly curious. However, I'm so happy with our selection of Orr I don't really give a rip who else interview.

What I worry about is that, after Orr takes us to a few NCAA's, will BG be able to muster the cash to keep him?

If he wins, we'll manage to find a way to pay him. See Miller.

In some scenarios, it would be a matter of public record.

It would depend on how the interview process was structured -- but resumes, cover letters, that sort of thing, they would be public records if they were submitted directly to the university for consideration.

On the other hand, if the process was done mostly by telephone, or if the process were outsourced to a headhunting firm, there would be challenges in coming up with a public records to deduce what happened (although any record of telephone calls would be a public record as well).

Drew is right: The AD is never going to give it up verbally. Some people submit their names and don't want their current employer to know they are looking.

On the other hand, we are taxpayers, and BGSU is a public institution. That's why such things are public record. In many cases, it's instructive for citizens to be able to find out who else was considered for a public job.

I'm curious who else was considered -- but not curious enough to file a public records request.

Also: Orr was such a strong hire, it strikes me as possible that BG went directly to him, and that there few if any other people were seriously considered.

I hope you're right, Drew. However, to keep Orr in that scenario, we would need several times what we're paying Miller. When a mens' MAC coach leaves for a job at a bigger athletic budget, the salary is ofter north of a half-a-mill.
