Jazz: McLeod a smashing success in debut
By Phil Miller
The Salt Lake Tribune

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Larry Miller was so thrilled for his lowest-paid player, he rushed into the locker room Wednesday night with a stat sheet in hand.
Look, the Jazz owner pointed out to Keith McLeod. You had eight assists. The Lakers -- all 12 of them -- had seven.
"That was great," McLeod said. "He was really happy for me."
So were his friends, relatives, teammates, coaches and 20,000 newly minted McLeod fans in the Delta Center. After a disappointing preseason and a weekend wondering if he would even make the team, McLeod emerged as the Jazz's default starter Wednesday -- and played like he had been running the offense for years.
Half of McLeod's assists produced layups for the Jazz, and twice he drove and dished for an open jumper.
Three came on passes to Carlos Boozer -- which, judging by his own Jazz debut, seems an intelligent choice.
Best of all, after committing four or more turnovers in four of seven preseason games, McLeod made only one such mistake in 29 minutes against the Lakers, a bad pass in the third quarter.
"I knew I could do it all along," McLeod said. "Coach [Jerry] Sloan had a lot of confidence to put me out there, and that gives you confidence in yourself. I can't even describe how it all came to me."
McLeod, forced into the lineup by injuries to Carlos Arroyo and Raul Lopez, rushed his shot a couple of times, and finished just 2-for-7 from the field. But even that was no problem for Sloan, who had an idea McLeod was about to shake off his surprisingly slow start.
"He played a lot better in practice the last couple of days. He was coming around," Sloan said. "He didn't go to summer league with us, so that put him a little behind. But he's getting comfortable because he's worked hard."

Way to go Keith! Keep it up. I knew he was a better player than he had shown in the preseason.

I know Keith had a great game the other night, but did anyone see on the wire yesterday that Utah signed two veteran point guards yesterday. Keith started because Utah's #1 guard is out for 4 weeks, their other guard is out for 6 weeks. With the signing of the two new guards his playing time will deminish. 1470, the Ticket, noted this yesterday afternoon and they were already talking about how Keith may need to look at playing for someone else...
