I read on a local Cincinnati website that BG has two more commits for the 2009 class. They are Orlando Williams and Markese Horne both from Princeton High School right here in Cincinnati. I have yet to find any articles in the local paper or anything online. If this is true then Coach Orr is trying to load up on the wing because that is the position they both play. Williams is a six foot three guard and Horne is a six foot five small forward. If this true the BG staff is going bonkers recruiting!! I just hope they can land some physical forward and centers. What do you guys think?

If you project out the BGSU roster for the next three years, Coach Orr and staff are certainly addressing the need areas. By the time the 2 or 4 verbals from the 2009 recruiting class show up the 1, 2, 3 and 4 positions will be completely revamped and much more athletic from everything that I'm hearing from those that have seen tapes on these kids. The 5 will be entrenched with two seniors ready to dance as Otis and Larson will be rounding off very solid and productive careers by that point.

Athleticism, toughness and quickness are the major need areas for this team. I think from reading and hearing all of the press so far that's exactly where we are going with our direction.

Not to mention that from a coaching perspective, I truly believe that as long as Louis is here, there is not a team in the MAC that knows that they can outcoach/or out-think us down the stretch. BG basketball is going to be a lot of fun to watch . . . I can't ever remember having kids lined up two recruiting classes out before to come in and play.

Good but not great news. I recently saw the two players who I earlier stated committed to the Falcons at the mall this past Saturday. I asked them about their commitments and they told me that their coaches and families made them de-commit. Reason being is because they did not consult anyone but themselves when committing to BG. But they said that they really want to come here and help take the program to the next level. I really hope after they sort out what other schools they are considering, that they will come to BG.

Thats really odd. Why would their coaches and families "make" them de-commit to Div.1 school. They should be happy and estatic at all offers , unless their familes and coaches are just talent mules for OSU or the Cinci Bearcats.

While I'm not saying it isn't odd, there's probably a number of other factors to consider in addition to what you believe about UC/OSU... Maybe the parents haven't had a chance to check out BG and want to make sure the kids are making the right decision (when/if they check out BG, we all know what THAT answer is). Or maybe they're just parents being parents, and want their kids to really think it out before making such a major decision.

It could always be about more than just basketball, you know.

Are the two that you saw in the mall, the same two in your first posting? If that's the case, then we still have 2 committed for 2009, so not all is lost. Maybe their families are just taking time to make the right decision or what to feel a part of the process and that road could still lead to BG.

Not saying those kids arent great players but I doubt they wouldn't come here because they just got a better offer. Rarely if ever do you see Ohio State, UC, Xavier getting in recruiting battles with MAC schools. I would say if they want to come here theres a 95% chance you'll see them here.

Verbal commitments from sophomores are nice, but you always have to take them with a grain of salt. A lot can happen between when a kid verbally commits and when he actually signs.

And by the time they're seniors you may not want them.

I think it's important for Mid Major programs to try and get Sophomores to commit. If they can get a prospect to commit you never know if a good recruit that you already have commited to your school turns into a big time recruit and you've already locked him up. You take chances by doing this, maybe by commiting to a kid who turns out to not to be what you thought but you also get the chance of stealing a big time player away from a big time program that didn't get to him in time.

If that's the case, and a kid blossoms late, chances are he's going to turn around and sign with a bigger school anyway.

Still, there's a chance the kid might stay loyal, and I like getting 'em early if you can.

I think it is odd that the kids even committed without there parents and friends chiming in. I would say if they were that interested in BG before, there is not going to be much from a new coach in his first year that is going to change their minds. Whatever drew them to coach Orr will still be here next year. Its not like they were attracted to his track record at BG.

Parents may feel that they should have been consulted by the school, too. Hard to say. All I can say is having your job depend on the whims and fancies of 17 year old boys is a scary way to make a living.
