Retired numbers
I performed a search but didn't find anything.
Refresh my memory, whose numbers are retired in men's bball?

#42 - Nate Thurmond
That's it... and I'm not even sure it's "officially" retired. It's been honored... but I don't think it's use is restricted.

Yeah, didn't one of the Faine's wear #42?
I was at the ceremony in 85, maybe 86 in which Big Nate was presented his framed jersey. Since then that jersey was literally lifted off the walls of Memorial Hall a handful of times. Glad to see 42 has a home on the inside walls of Anderson Arena now!

Shouldn't we retire some numbers? We've had some GREAT players here. Shouldn't they be recognized in this custom?
I'm just asking. I'm drunk with lack of sleep so bear with me.

Thurmond in hoops, Paul Miles #29 in football, McPhee's #9 and Emerson/Holzinger's #19 in hockey. I think that's it, at least for the "major" sports, although something tells me hockey might have one more...Falcon137 wrote:Are there any numbers retired for any sport at BG?

Nelson Emerson - Hockey
Brian Holzinger - Hockey
There's another hockey name, but it escapes me at the moment.

I suspect that's a slippery slope. Lots of disagreement over who is deserving, etc. Moreover, eventually you might have to have centers wearing number 119 or something. UT just retired Mix and Knuth's numbers and I think those were the first. They may have retired Haris Charalambous as well as a tribute. Nobody else, I'm pretty sure.

Emerson and Holzinger are both 19, and George McPhee is 9. Holzinger and McPhee are BG's two Hobey Baker award winners.

IMO, this is just one of the many reasons the traditions of BG are not known to the majority of new fans.
AD should be highlighted every year, McLeod too, Maybe Washington v Pacers watch parties at the doyt on the big screen, I dont know, but do something
Nate Thurmond should be celebrated with a parade. That 1984 team should all come back in 2009 and have an entire weekend for them. Not just announcing names at half times of games.

That would be awesome. I'm in for sending letters to push for that to happen.Globetrotter wrote:That 1984 team should all come back in 2009 and have an entire weekend for them. Not just announcing names at half times of games.

I agree that things could be more visible, and think the AD is getting better. The 42 banner is a sign of this. Also, the 1984 NC Hockey Team in fact did have a whole weekend for them in 2004, the twentieth anniversary of the big W in Lake Placid.Globetrotter wrote:IMO, this is just one of the many reasons the traditions of BG are not known to the majority of new fans.

A Garden of Honor between the Football stadium and new convocation center I think would be ideal
Giant lifesize statutes of Anderson and Doyt surrounded by busts of Falcon notables and plaques with their accomplishments, surrounded by a large garden of bushes, some shaped as football players, athletes etc.
Bernie Casey
Nate Thurmond
Dave Wottle
Orel Hershiser
Howard Komives
Antonio Daniels
Rob Blake
One for Scott Hamilton to connect ourselves further with the community.
Bring them back and cristen one each home football game. Or each home football game or each home game not Parents weekend, Homecoming or opening game, 2 or 3 a year to start off and then one or two as we go.
Imagine recruits walking through the Garden of Honor thinking one day my bust can be here. One day I can be amongst these guys, and then at half time of their visit Josh Harris comes out and we reveal his bust. So what seems cool, but maybe a little far off, is all of a sudden within reach.
Please add some names. For those of you wiser with years, Who would go on your original Garden of Honor? (Can only start with ten lets say, I am including )
