BG hoops back on shaking ground - Take 5

Well, here we are again, and it appears BG hoops is teetering on shaking ground, again. Let’s face it, we were already a pretty poor team entering this season. Basically it seemed like we had nowhere to go but up entering this year. We’ve had losing seasons in four of the last five years including basement finishes in the MAC the last two seasons. On top of that, we are also breaking in a new coaching staff. After a nice beginning to the year with a 3-1 start, we now seem like we’ve been in full reverse the last couple weeks and we could be in for another bumpy ride in the next few weeks to come. Instead of gearing up for a run at any type of improvement in the MAC in three weeks, it looks like we could be in for another tough and long haul. We lost a solid contributor in Erik Marschall before the season ever got off the ground, we had another defection (albeit a minimal loss) in Dusan Radivojevic, and now our only senior - Ryne Hamblet - the guy who graces the cover of our media guide and who is one of our top players, is out indefinitely and could possibly be gone. I mean, what’s next?

I know this season is not over by any stretch, but don't some of you agree this is just all getting so old year after year anymore with this "program?" Can we ever have just some good news about this program or must it always be something that has us scratching our heads wondering how to overcome the next hurdle in front of us? I know, I know, the sky is falling in on us all, it’s the end of the world, etc. But man, I'm just tired of us being the run of the mill in the MAC, the whipping boy for everyone in the conference, and the butt of jokes in men's hoops. It sad for me to think a graduating class of students could pass through BGSU and never understand or experience what we all mean when we talk about the "House That Roars," or to see us beat a number of the teams in the MAC that have long, multiple-game winning streaks against us, or what it's like to be competitive in the conference. For nearly 40 years we've been saying "maybe next year" for an NCAA Tournament appearance, but for the past five years or so, we've basically resorted to just wishing for some resemblance of a “team” and “program.”

Your passion is commendable, but our AD observed what you've observed and hired a new coach who's coached 9 games so far. Give the man time!

Here's 3 things to be excited about:

1) We beat Cincinnati in Cincinnati.
2) We started two juniors, a sophomore and two freshmen in the last game.
3) We have a brand new arena on the horizon.

If it's still that exasperating, take a gander at some travel packages and watch the football team play in a bowl game.

People...I know it's hard, but it is completely unfair to saddle this team and this staff with the decades of frustration experienced by fans of the program. They didn't cause any of this, so let's give them a chance to deveelop without dredging up decades of disappointment

Here's the good news (since you asked):

New coach hired that has had previous success on the court and in the recruiting wars. The new coach has not yet brought in a large number of players recruited to fit his system yet there has been evidence the current players are able to adapt. While only a couple of weeks won't completely change the mindset of many players their is plenty of evidence of a new attitude in the program. We saw evidence of a good stretch in Cinci already this season and we certainly should see a few more good stretches before the 07-08 season wraps up.

Go Falcons!

Before things get twisted around any more, I want to be very clear that my above post was in no way directed at the new coaching staff. I clearly pointed out and acknowledged that we are breaking in a new staff and they obviously had nothing to do with the past and haven’t even been here a full season yet. My post was directed about the state of our program and how every year we seem to fall into the same cycle. What really has me disappointed is the latest news about Hamblet. I have no idea what he’s done or what has happened, and frankly I don’t even care to know. I’m excited about the coaching staff we have put together and the fact of the matter is, he was suspended and if we trust in our new staff, which I do, there must have been a good reason for it. We had no control over Marschall’s health, losing Dusan can be argued to be not much of a loss at all, and the Hamblet situation is not what you want to see a team dealing with as the conference season is just around the corner.

The bottom line is, after every season we keep hope as say, “maybe next year.” Just remember, it is “next year.” It’s been next year for BG for quite some time now. I would love nothing more than to see this team be able to come together and stop the sliding and get us ready for a return to the top of the MAC again. But right now, we've again got a huge challenge in front of us again with the teams sitting in the MAC East.

.....and all that being said, I was somewhat disappointed in the lackadaisical attitude and effort that we had in the first half yesterday. I don't know if it changed in the 2nd half, because I wasn't there to see it, as I went home to watch the women and the Browns. Talent and style is one thing, but lazy play turns me off more than anything. :(

Gotta give Coach Orr time...the great start got us excited but reality has set in a bit. This team and program is a work in progress. It's going to take some time but I have complete faith in Coach Orr to get this team and program to the championship level.

Factman pointed out our attitude was lazy yesterday. THAT is a concern. You can be short on talent but never on attitude. If you lose a game where you played your best but the other team was better? I can live with that. But I can't live with a half hearted attempt.

Let's move on and get ready for Indiana State Saturday.

GO FALCONS

Freak, you hit it exactly. Coach Orr has a proven track record. He is implementing his system. I really like what I have read about his recruits next year ie. , Brown and Calhoun. I am excited for the future of the program. The roster is loaded with underclassman. I am heading to Terre Haute on Saturday, I am looking forward to see this team play.

While I understand where your coming for I have to disagree about your first 2 things to be excited about.

1) UC is horrid this year. RPI in the 240's, I don't care what the jersey says on the front that was not a good win.

2) While I think there is some talent in place, we started 2 soph. 2 frosh, and a junior....and lost. Our wins have come against teams with RPI's off...158, 278, 310, and 320.

The arena is a plus. Recruits coming in is a +. I just hope all the suspensions and other problems doesn't affect the kids were bringing in.

UC is still a Big East team and almost beat a ranked Xavier team on their home court in a very hostile environment. We have young talent in place that will only get better. In fact, I'm even more excited now that I think about it.

I don't think it's fair to say "All the suspensions" considering we've only had one so far, and I'm aware of no other systemic "problems" than a young team getting its sea legs.

At least we agree on the brand new arena being a good thing.

Agree to disagree, UC is an awful Big East team. They will be lucky to win 1 or 2 Big East games....I just can not consider this a good win, although really any win is a good win at this point.

With all due respect, there is no comparison between our football program and our men's basketball program. Falcon football > Falcon men's basketball.

Especially over the past five or six years.
