Isn't it great that on a day Toledo looks for coverage honoring Bobby Nichols that BG steals a whole lot of attention from the regional media with the unvieling of an $8 million dollar gift, more information on the new arena, the men upsetting a nationally ranked team, clinching a share of the women's MAC title and the most successful senior class in MAC history is recognized on Senior Day.

The Blade buried some of the BG stories on their website but I still love the timing this weekend. This would have to be considered one of the greatest weekends in BG basketball history due to the multiple significant events for both programs.

Yup. Certainly wouldn't want one of the greatest coaches in MAC history and a pretty decent gentleman to get his due. It was a great ceremony at halftime and the large contingent from WMU stayed in their seats and applauded Nichols warmly at some length. They were very classy fans.

Most of the 7,000 fans there didn't seem too distracted by the news out of BG. They did however give several long, standing ovations to Nichols, Mix, McDonald and Conroy as well as the over 40 former players who returned for the event, including newly minted college president John Rudley.

Most UT fans I know are glad to see BG begin the sorely needed upgrading their facilities and are glad to see UT upgrade their antiquated building as well as this will help the conference attract more national attention and better athletes. Glad the timing worked for you.

I'm with H2Oville on this one. I got to meet Bob Nichols when he was recruiting Jeff Haar at Woodmore. Jeff was a senior when I was in 8th grade. Coach Nichols came to several games to watch Jeff play that year and was just the nicest guy. His teams at Toledo won a lot of games and he SHOULD be celebrated.

Sharing the spotlight with him seems far more appropriate than stealing it away from him.

I guess I should be more eloquent and kind as well. While I believe Nichols does derserves his due based on the attention he brought the MAC as well as Toledo (please note I never stated anything critical of the man) the bone I'm picking is that if this were reversed we may have never seen a camera or writer in BG this weekend. The events in BG simply couldn't be ignored. The AD at UT not so long ago attempting to capture the media through manipulation and leading up to that time I already felt BG was already slighted in the regional media. The Blade, for example, was consistently publishing weeknight scores as late when we won and you lost although they made the paper when roles were reversed.

I liked the guy when he was a guest at a basketball camp I attended and I even went up to Centennial Hall to watch him coach 2 or 3 times (non-BG games). Apologies and best wishes to Bobby if I slighted him although it will take much more for me to forgive the regional media. Luckily we have 36 and websites such as this to get scores and updates from on a consistent basis.

Haar was probably barely a D1 player. the great thing about Haar was that he'd put up 15-25 against every ranked team we ever played and grab about 10 boards at 6'4". The bad thing about Haar was he'd get 5 points, 0 boards and 6 TOs against everybody else. Drove me nuts!
