Stroh Center Commentary

Don't know if any of you check the BGNews site often, but I've been following along with some of the commentary surrounding the other day's article about the Strohs' donation and today's opinion piece about the University's use of resources. It amazes me how ignorant some people can be of the facts surrounding this issue. There's one particular poster in the comments who seems like the spitting image of one of our very own BGSU haters here on AZZ.

Anyway, check it out if you want. I think some of you probably have a better grasp on the facts than I do. I'm having some fun with the comments. Immature as it may seem to have that sort of an argument with someone online, it sure is entertaining.

That one poster is either just trying to get under peoples skin or is a complete d-bag. I think it is the latter.

Ditto. I think whatever my next comment is to them, it will be my last. I went ahead and wrote and submitted a guest column, and I think I'm going to leave it at that.

I seriously hope that kid never graduates. I'd hate to see his name dirtied by having a BGSU degree to it. Yeah, the university is such a joke...gimme a break kid.

Such strong opinions, yet not enough balls to post his/her crap under his/her actual name. :?

If I weren't a sports fan, maybe I'd see this a little differently, but not much. The day the University turns down private donations because they believe there should be money spent elsewhere is the day I'll be outraged, not because they're working to improve a facet of campus that very generous people believe need improved. The Sebo family saw the need for better offices and training facilities. Done. The Stroh's saw the need for a modern convo center. Done. The Thompson's saw the need for a new student union. Done.

And hasn't, in the last 10-15 years, the university completely rebuilt one dorm (Founders) and made major renovations to a few others (quads)? Aren't they also working on a brand new arts building?

What is it about people that makes them just want to bitch about anything, just to hear themselves bitch?

We already have Anderson Arena to house basketball and volleyball games, and as a frequent reader of The BG News, I have not seen any indication that it is inadequate

Ok who laughed when they read that in the opinion piece, because I sure did, talk about not having a clue

Just to name a few within recent years:

Wolfe Center
BTSU
Dorm renovations to Founders, & the quads (if you're right, TG)
Complete renovation of 1st floor of Kohl Hall
New sidewalks and other infrastructure improvements

...and so on

Yeah, it's not like they rebuilt the entire campus overnight, but what the hell do people expect?

And yes, I definitely laughed out loud when I read that the writer never got the impression that AA was inadequate.

Anderson's a dump. It's our dump, and I love it, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a dump.

It was a dump the first time I was in AA in 1988. Wow 20 years ago. Time flies.

Seriously TG, since when do people think they have the right to bitch about private donations. BGSU should be and is honored to be receiving donations like that of the Stroh's on March 1. Let's say for a minute that instead of building a new convo center, that money was directed to rebuilding the dormitories of Harshman and Kreischer. Would the people living in the other dorms be bitching about that? Would the colleges of BGSU and outsiders be bitching that the money wasn't going toward academics? Yes and yes. It's just another case of "if it doesn't benefit me, then I'm against spending the money on it." It's this kind of thinking that gets school levies voted down.

What people like the opinion columnist don't seem to recognize is that this money isn't BGSU's. BGSU didn't decide to spend 7.7 million dollars on a new convocation center, that was never their choice. The Stroh's directed that the money should be spent that way. What more does BG have to do but thank Kermit and Mary Lou for their generosity and get down to business. And yes, I agree that if these people want to complain about the lack of funding for educational facilities (which is BS since East Hall, BTSU, Olscamp, and other buildings have been upgraded during Sidney Ribeau's tenure) then they should get off their ass and make a donation or two themselves. I volunteer with the BGSU Tuition Raffle, and I know that through our work we'll be raising roughly $12000 to $15000 this year to endow scholarships for the BGSU Honors Program. It just sickens me to see people complaining like this when they aren't helping the problem.

+1. The person that wrote that is probably a woman that hates sports and has never set foot inside Anderson Arena in her life.

Great idea about the guest column. Blinding ignorance about the funding process needs to be countered at every turn. The University is so obsessed about funding sports facilities that it took almost five decades and two major private donors just to get the ball rolling. I'm guessing these people have never actually seen a game at the "adequate Anderson Hall" if they think the outlet situation in the Life Science Building is the epitome of outdated inconvienence.

I did get a kick out of some of the other "Most Recently Commented" BG News headlines: a reference to ManBearPig, a report on transgender community support, a fraternity accused of hazing (dog bites man!) and a person that has spent two years sitting on a toilet.

I had forgotten about East Hall (though I'm no fan of it's placement, it can't be discounted as a dedication to education. Olscamp, too.

And you're right on, 24, about the "if it doesn't benefit me..." line of thinking. My only question to the original letter writer to the BG News (though don't get me wrong, at least her concerns were pretty well constructed and written out) is...where would she like the donations to go for a "Liberal Studies" major? $8 million to everyone?

All I know is when scrolled down and saw this person's major it all made sense.

There is somebody, actually, there are many such people like that, all of the time.

The best way to respond is in calm, rational, and civil tones, as to contrast to the pathetic dweebs that spout off all the time.
