Sounds like this could be a very good get for coach Orr.

This kid was a VERY (I think sophomore year) early commit to UC a few years back. He decommitted to look at other options this past spring/summer. He was apparently getting offers from most of the MAC, and some interest from members of the ACC. AFAIK he still had an offer on the table from UC as well.

Anyways, here's the writeup on him from the Miami Elite Camp this summer (This done for MiamiHawk Insider):

Danny McElroy: McElroy was one of the most, if not the most, impressive of all those at the camp. He is a warrior in the post intimidating others and cleaning the glass. McElroy, from Cincinnati west side high school La Salle, is very similar to another Danny from the west side – former Miami power forward and 2005 1st team All-MAC player Danny Horace. Look for this power forward to be one of the top targets for Miami in the coming months.

*edited to add: Actually I see the byline on the MiamiHawk article is written by a T. Tod Mollaun...the same as our original poster?

=>One and the same.

After Miami was out of scholarships, it was between Ohio and BG. He also visited Kent two weeks ago and WOTS is that he did not come back from NE Ohio impressed.

Excellent! Thanks for the info.

Do you have an further observations on his play? You still think the kid has potential to be an All-MAC level PF?

=>Absolutely. I love McElroy as a player. He is a warrior. He will be very tough in the MAC. He will struggle in OOC games against taller BCS teams.

There are some players because of height are better suited to compete against BCS teams, but are not the best MAC players because they are stiffs. McElroy is the opposite.

Like I said, he reminds me of Danny Horace. Horace was a great MAC player who struggled in non-league games because he was just under 6-6.

THAT ALL SAID, I am no expert talent evaluator. When I was a senior at Miami, I watched a preseason Miami exhibition game against AIA or some foreign team. There was an incoming frosh for Miami who I thought looked terrible and would be a wasted scholarship. I was actually frustrated that Herb Sendek went all the way to Long Island, New York for this guy. That frosh, Wally Szczerbiak, a short 3.5 years later was selected by the T-Wolves as the 6th overall player in the 1999 NBA Draft.

So assign whatever value you want to my opinions. ;-)

So, basically, from these TWO "ratings", Garfield Heights has THREE players mentioned? WOW! I scored GHHS basketball for 26yrs. and the BEST record we EVER had during this time was 11-9 regular season. Sonny Johnson has to be one HELL of a coach!

No I didn't but thanks. The Enquirer is usually a bit slow about things like this. But they have made some upgrades on their sites and are doing alot better.

It would seem that, as long as the Cincy area keeps producing players, that Orr should do quite well in the recruiting wars, using his SW Ohio contacts. :lol:

Man, that is great news. Coach Orr is gonna have a hell of a program in the not so distant future.
