Falcons Beat Ashland

BG beat Ashland in a game that was alot closer than the 87-63 score shows. First half BG was just stagnant. They had plently of open looks but couldnt get anything to drop. BG was up one at the half but came out and took care of business in the 2nd. 32 turnovers forced by the Falcons, impressive. We have alot to work on but all in all a good showing.

Ashland played zone defense almost the entire day, and our half court set looked very weak against it. Our philosophy to attack the zone appears to be ball movement around the perimeter to find an open shooter. We got Moten some good looks in this regard, but he was missing early. Once he started hitting those three balls we scored, but it still wasn't the greatest offense you'll see against a zone. We really seemed to want to try and feed the post against the zone, but that's pretty difficult to do, and we seemed to really force some things for whatever reason. We weren't able to penetrate the zone at all.
At times in the first half, and throughout the entire second half, we were able to score off our defense. Be it bad passes/plays by Ashland (and there were many) or good defensive plays by our guys, we were able to get out and run a little and get lots of easy looks.
Defensively nothing really stuck out good or bad to me. We had a lot of steals, but we gave up some easy buckets at times too. I think we probably did have 6-7 blocks, but Ashland was not nearly as athletic as us (or any D1 team will be), so that's to be expected.
Individually I thought Moten got real hot for a stretch in the first half, but didn't do much in the 2nd. Marschall looked really good grabbing rebounds and scoring, especially for his first game back. Miller got a lot of transition points. Brown, Clements, and Jakubowski all had some "NICE LOOK!" type passes, especially in the 2nd half. Scott Thomas looked good attacking the glass. OP got some boards, had a few blocks, and had a stretch in the 2nd half that he even scored a little. Larson was pretty much what you'd expect, but didn't play much. Knight didn't have a very good game at all, including a HORRID stretch of a minute or so in the 2nd half (Blew a dunk, airballed a 3, then got stuffed hard on a layin on the same possession...to be followed by the guy who blocked his shot drilling a 3 in his face on the other side).
The free throw shooting, especially Marschall, was again absolutely putrid. I think we could take a random group of azz.com members and beat this team in a free throw shooting competition.
All in all it was great to just be in Anderson Again. Can't wait to start the real games.

I enjoyed seeing a full bench with quality players ready to enter the game. I was also impressed with Thomas.

Sign me up. I can make about 75-80% most days, which is better than just about anybody on our men's bb team.

Let's be real! Yea most of us can shoot over 80% when we're just chiling out back, but when you've played 20+ minutes of high intensity, division one, college basketball, and you're legs are tired and there is actual pressure on you, good luck! I understand they didn't shoot it too well from the line, but lets be real. Why haven't we started "I can kick a 35 yard FG" thread after every miss there?

I think '24 has already started that thread. Or maybe it was about how he could field punts, anyway I'm really shocked that he isn't lettering in at least 3 sports at BG.

I said it as a joke, but I'm not convinced that it isn't at least a little true. Yeah, doing it in the heat of the moment and pressure is tough, but yesterday wasn't exactly a pressure-filled situation.
Honestly, I think the real reason why we struggle so much with our team shooting percentage is who gets the bulk of our FT attempts. The guys we have that can attack the basket and get to the line are Marschall, Knight, Miller, and Polk. All of them are really poor FT shooters. Our guards are probably decent enough shooting them, but none of them are really the types to beat you off the dribble and get to the line.
Actually that was the one thing I was a little disappointed in Brown yesterday. I was hoping he was a penetrating type guard, but he looked more comfortable taking jump shots than trying to get to the rim. I really, REALLY miss the McLeod/Lewis type guards who can attack the rim. Not to say Brown or Jakubowski won't become that type of player, but I haven't seen it from them yet.

Anyone know why Madlock didn't play yesterday?

Our basis of comparison is with the rest of college basketball.
We already knew that Nate has struggled from the line, and I'm not sure why bad FT shooting is such an issue in an exhibition game. For all we know, Nate might bring his up by 20%.

Hey, I never said I was Devin Hester. The only thing I said I could do was fair-catch properly. And I'm pretty confident of that, its not that difficult. Just like shooting free throws isn't difficult either. I get that shooting FTs is tougher at the end of games when you're tired and all, but its not like you intrinsicly forget how to do it. My feeling is, either you know how to shoot free throws well, or you don't. Pressure is irrelevant. If you can't shoot them under pressure, than you can't shoot them.
As for field goals, my career long is 37 yards, but that was on a blatant toe-poke that just happened to go straight. It was luck. I can't make anything outside of 30 kicking the "correct" way.

Not trying to belittle you at all 24, but i seriously doubt that you could still make 75-80% at the line during a presure situation. Its not like when we go to the rec on Tuesdays and shooting. This is after you have been running up and down the court and constantly getting bumped before you go to the line. In a pressure situation, you have so many things going through your head. I don't want to hear things about blocking out the crowd because to quote Mike Gundy, "THATS NOT TRUE!".
Sorry I had to.
Anyway, I remain to say that it is the easiest shot in the game because it is a set 15 foot shot with nobody guarding you, but I'll admit it, I'd say I'm about a 70-75% shooter from the line I would easily have to sacrifice about 15% in a big game, end game situation.
As for the field goal thing, I'd have to see you make a 30 yarder with the "normal kick, " I have never seen you do anything other than a toe poke. Maybe we'll have to see if the Doyt will be open before or after a practice this week and just have to test out that theory.

See you at the Buffalo game Sville.

We'll also see if we can get a guy like Antonio Smith to run you down trying to make a fair catch after I punt to you and see if you don't muff it...
