Hopefully it is nothing serious.....this was in the Blade:

LARSON HURT: BGSU reserve post player Marc Larson was held out of practice yesterday because of injury.

Larson left the game in the second half Saturday with an apparent left knee injury, but returned to action and finished with two points in 15 minutes.

"He got bumped around a little bit," Orr said. "I don't know everything [about Larson's injury]. I'd rather wait until I do know everything to comment about Marc and his physical status."

I hope he just tweaked it and didn't tear anything. He works hard out there and isn't always pretty doing it, but we need him down low on the block for us.

From the BG News Blog tonight:

LARSON OUT: Marc Lawson is out for at least tonight's game according to BG SID Jason Knavel. He doesn't know the specifics other than it is still the knee that Larson tweaked at the Ohio game. Knavel also said he believes tests are ongoing. Larson is walking with a slight limp on the court under his own power. As soon as I know what the report, you guys will know.

I disagree. I think he provides the most unproductive minutes imaginable and takes minutes away from players who could contribute. I never like to see anyone get hurt, and I'm not going to deny that he works his ass off, but he's not a D1 talented player. He can body up defensively, but that's about all he offers and even then he gets pushed around by strong kids and is too slow against quicker ones.

I hope he comes back healthy, but I think we're a better team with Marc Larson playing closer to 10 minutes than 20.

If Otis Polk is not playing the 5, who is?

I agree with hammb. Although its a shame to see him get hurt, losing Larson is pretty much addition by subtraction, IMO.

Again who plays center if Larson is out.

For a guy who is averaging a block a game to get torn apart here so often is just ridiculous. The kid might not be great, but he is smart and he gives valuable minutes in relief of OP.

Erik Marschall...the offense switches more to a 3 guard/2 forward type then I noticed. Actually I guess it's always kind of 3 guard/2 something...

Larson is having surgery to clean up a torn meniscus as I understand it. Don't know how long he's out... rest of the year?

We went with that smaller offense whenever Polk was off the floor last night and it worked. The defense was noticeably weaker, but Marschall provided some scoring that Larson never could. With a frontcourt of Knight-Marschall-Thomas we were much more athletic than we would be with Larson.

I guess I don't get the "Who plays center if not Marc" thing. He has the size of a center, but that is all he provides at the position. He's not a great defensive player, but he's decent. He's among the worst rebounders I've ever seen and he provides nothing offensively either. It seems foolish to me to throw a guy out there who cannot contribute just because he is a center in size. I'd much rather just go with a smaller lineup and deal with any defensive deficiencies we may have by gaining some offense.

If he's got a torn meniscus it sounds as though we're going to get to see who is right in this argument. I would guess that he'd be out for weeks if not the entire year.

You can play on a torn meniscus.

FWIW: I would gamble HAMMB is right and he is out for the year. I have a Maniscus tear that has never been operated on. I also am not 6-10 and weigh 265 pounds. I imagine his knees take more pressure then mine. If he goes under the knife he will need 4-8 weeks to heal. It is going to depend on him. RICE first and if he is still having problems surgery.

As far as proving the argument, this wont prove a thing. You said he was a liability. Playing Marschall at the 5 wont prove that he is or is not a liability. I am just curious as to who guards the other teams big man when Polk is off the floor.

IMO Marschall is our best low post scorer and should be playing much more. If it proves to be not a big deal to have a 6-7 guy guarding the other teams 5 then Marschall should be on the floor every time over Larson. IMO Marschall has rare ability and could be a phenomenal 4 in the MAC.

The nice thing is that most MAC teams don't have a wealth of big men that you really need to guard. On top of that I think Otis might be the best defensive big man in the conference, if not he's close to it. If he plays within himself like he did most of last night's game we can get 25-30 minutes out of him we won't be as concerned about who guards the post for the other 10 minutes. Marschall is a defensive liability regardless of who he guards, so you may as well let him do the job. Maybe Knight would be fine against some of the quicker guys, but I would think he'd struggle against stronger centers.

We'll miss Larson on the defensive end, but I think the increased minutes for Knight & Marschall will more than balance it out on the offensive end. At least it looked that way last night. We'll see when we go against a team with a better front court. BSU was very weak inside.
