As announced today, the Bowling Green men's basketball team will host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference member Canisius on Saturday, Feb. 21 for the seventh annual ESPNU BracketBusters series. The two-day event matches up 102 NCAA Tournament hopefuls in games across the country and will feature 13 nationally televised games.
Bowling Green and Canisius have met 12 times previously, though not since a 71-62 Golden Griffins win on Jan. 13, 1987. The Falcons hold an 8-4 edge in the all-time series.
Canisius is 7-15 on the year and 2-10 in the MAAC. The Golden Griffins did play Mid-American Conference school Buffalo early in the year, dropping a 69-64 decision. The team is currently sitting on a three-game losing streak. Bowling Green, on the other hand, has won three straight to improve to 11-9 on the season.
As part of the BracketBusters agreement, all 51 home teams must play a return game in either November or December of the 2009-10 season. Canisius is located in Buffalo, N.Y.

I was thinking about making the trip up for this one. It's on my b-day and I think there's another (WBB or hockey) game that day, too.
Canisius as an opponent goes in the "con" column of making the trip.

Women's basketball is on the road that day, at Akron, but hockey hosts Michigan State at 5:05.

I thought the pairings were all about getting teams of equal records together. How does their 7-15 on the year and 2-10 in the MAAC "compare" to our 11-9 and 4-3 in the MAC? Not saying they won't/can't beat us I just thought it was supposed to match comparable records to play each other.

Sweet. That means BGSU is coming to Buffalo next season. I hope that game is on the same weekend as a Bills home game. That would be a sports fantasy trip for me.

I would consider making the trip to Buffalo. The only obvious downside is that i would have to be in Buffalo

Ugh...another home game that I won't be able to attend! Having a 30th b-day party for one of my best friends that day. And of course it's at my house, so I couldn't even blow it off
I'm a bad BG fan...I'm going to miss 3 home games in Feb this year (and I've already missed a couple others), I don't think I've missed 3 in a season any of the last 4-5 years!

I already threw out my opinion over this game on the hockey forum, which is that this game sucks, but I won't rehash that. The bigger question is what in the holy fricking hell was ESPN thinking pairing us with a 7-15 team that's 2-10 in their own conference? I know we haven't been that great recently, but my god.
I'm not even sure I want to go to this game anymore. It's meaningless.

PLEASE DON'T GO
They could have given us Butler, St. Mary's, or Davidson and it still would have been a "meaningless" game

I'm really too lazy to check into the records of the other bracket buster teams, but maybe it's the best they could to do.
I'm sure there is a west coast team, or southern team that would have been closer record wise, but the location/travel expenses, not sure if anyone else that is a more "equal" match would agree to flying to Ohio. I'm sure they take those sorts of things into account.
I know everyone is going to point to Akron (or Kent?) Going out to play at St. Mary's (i think) last season. They were also a feature ESPN game in the Bracket Buster event, and I'm sure got a bigger check form ESPN (not to mention the exposure for the team/university that would come from being on ESPN in PT).

Now how do you figure that? Because they aren't MAC teams either?
If Davidson came to AA, we'd have a nearly packed house because of Stephon Curry's presence. Butler would also draw very well. St. Marys I'm not so sure about but even they would be better than CANISIUS. Attendance aside, those three teams you mentioned would be great challenges for our team and who knows, maybe we pull off a great win in the process. Instead we have to settle for some third-rate team that isn't in our league record-wise. So maybe I went overboard by saying the game was totally meaningless, but it's about as irrelevant as a home basketball game can be. Kinda like Towson. And Eastern Illinois. And all those other garbage teams we played at home OOC this year.
And yes, this is the type of game where I would use the slightest excuse out there to not go to. So I'm a bad fan. Sue me. I'm sick and tired of our men's basketball program never playing anybody good or well-known during out of conference play, especially at home. This has been going on for four years now, and we wonder why attendance is bad.
