Four-way tie for first in MAC East & what BG needs now

BG, Miami, Akron and Buffalo are all 10-5 with one game remaining. We need BG needs to beat Ohio, Kent State needs to beat Akron and Buffalo needs to beat Miami. If that were to happen, BG and UB would finish tied for first at 11-5 and the Falcons would win the tie-breaker after sweeping the Bulls. I don't have the energy to figure out all the other scenarios but we split with Akron and were swept by Miami. Obviously, we don’t want to finish tied with Miami or we’ll lose out and I’m not sure all the tie-breaking factors if we were to finish tied with Akron. So Sunday, we pull for BG, Kent State & Buffalo to win. If all of that happens, we get the #1 seed, a first-round bye and secure at minimum an NIT bid. At minimum, if we beat Ohio and not factoring in what the other three do, we'll at least secure a first-round bye. If we lose to Ohio, we could possibly fall all the way to #6. Just goes to show how important every game is......can we play EMU over again???

And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, a two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned.

This is the tiebreaker formula from the mac-sports website:

Tiebreaker Information
1. Head-to-head competition
2. Winning percentage* vs. ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division; versus
common opponents, regardless of the number of times played)
3. Coin flip
* Winning percentage is used instead of record because of situations where teams do not play each
other the same number of times. Therefore, a team that is 1-0 (1.000) would win the tiebreaker over a
team that is 1-1 (.500).

If I interpret this correctly BG would win the 1 seed in a 3-way tie with Buffalo and Akron based on a 3-1 record against those same 2 teams. Miami would win a 3-way tie with Akron and BG. Bottom line is the Akron game is inconsequential with regards to BG, if the Falcons win and Buffalo wins BG gets the one seed.

BG wins, Miami wins BG is the 3 seed

BG wins, Miami wins, Akron wins, BG is the 4 seed

Of course if I misinterpreted the tiebreaker none of these scenarios make sense.

If your head is still intact.... we beat OU, we're MAC Champs. If Buffalo wins, too, we're the #1 seed and going to the NIT (until we win the MAC Tourney  )

If something happens where Nate and BMO's combined 157 points in their last game at AA (with DC adding a paltry 35) doesn't result in a BG win, then it's okay to root for Miami(OH). But just a little bit.

Sorry, I was just low on caffeine at that time. I pretty confident we will get a first round bye. That says quite a bit given our thoughts of being a .500 team at best at the start of the season.

Now, hello Mr. Iced Tea.

By "start of the season", you mean "middle of January", right? Despite a couple hiccups, this team has been incredible the last month and a half. No quit whatsoever.

This team has given every ticket buyer their monies worth. No more laying down. It's been fun to watch.

IMO the loss to Miami showed me alot. Down 11 in the second half, fought back and had chances to win a seventh road game in conference. If nothing else, this team will just battle. Any wins in Cleveland will just be a bonus at this point.

And then it goes to BCS standings, right? :-D

I don't think a 1st round bye and #1 seed secures "at minimum" an NIT bid. I would hope so, but who knows what the selection committee thinks. We should, at least, be in that 3rd tourney. I don't think we're guaranteed an NIT bid. We'll see. Let's just finish strong.

Regular season champ is guaranteed an NIT bid.

Of course, you may be onto something with a selection committee if there is a three-way tie, but I think whoever the conference declares the #1 team (through tiebreakers) is the champ and goes to the NIT.

If we can't win the conference, I hope we shake out to a three seed and likely avoid a MAC East team for the first two rounds of the MAC tourney, should we win a game there.... of course, there's always being careful what you wish for, so let's just play some hoops! :-D
