Bowling Green Adds James Erger To Men's Basketball Team
by Jason Knavel, Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications

8/25/2009 11:19:04 AM
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green men’s basketball coach Louis Orr has announced that freshman James Erger has joined the program for the 2009-10 season. Erger is a two-time first team all-state player from Texas.

A 6-foot-6 guard, Erger averaged 25.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game at Princeton High School in Princeton, Texas. He led his team to a 22-11 record as a senior and was named district most valuable player, all-district, and all-region. Off the court, he was class president and an eagle scout.

“James is a talented, skilled, versatile basketball player with a high IQ for the game,” Orr said. “He is a coach’s son and has good size for a perimeter player and can play multiple positions. He is an excellent shooter from three-point range and a good ballhandler, passer and rebounder. He just knows how to play. James is a high character person who brings a lot of positive intangibles to our program and we are excited to have him join our Falcon family.”

6'6" guard

Not be a wet blanket, but why is he coming in so late? He just seems awfully talented to be such a late arrival.

Scout.com has 0 info on him, other than he is a 6'6 guard. Listed as 1 star. He doesn't look very athletic. Anyone know what division or class his high school is in?

Heh? That kid looks very athletic. Sure, the videos show only the highlights, but it's clear that he's fast and quick off the floor. He has a nice stroke and a scorers mentality.

No need to pretend he is a D1 point guard. He's a 2-3 with court vision. I see him being a contributor as a freshman. However, I suspect that he'll need to reign himself in and become more disciplined.

JoJak came late. So did Trevor Huffman at Kent, if you remember him. Doesn't seem to be an academic question mark or a flake. This isn't necessarily a negative, but I too am curious. Who knows? The range of possible reasons is very wide.

Can't see the video but I am trying to figure out how a 6'6" guy who gets 25 and 7 can NOT be athletic evn if he plays in a lower division. Crack don't smoke itself and points don't score themselves.

Now that's funny.

Oh yeah, and as for academics or flakiness, he was an Eagle Scout.

Just sifted thru 10 lbs of google and bing links. These are links that say something interesting that we didn't already know. The feeling I'm getting is that Erger waited and waited for the best possible offer and talked to a variety of schools. He may have been waiting on another offer that never came thru. One article mentions that he spoke with a few high majors, but nothing on the their level of interest. As you can plainly see, he is thin, and that is probably the main reason he was available so late. Also, he's from a small school on the far outskirts of Dallas-Ft.Worthless, so he's been overshadowed and overlooked to some extent. I still think he looks like a contributor as a freshman. He'll provide good midrange depth, something we don't have that much of.

He's also evidently a coach's son or at least some relative of his was his HS coach. The 2009 Texas All Star Roster shows both player and coach with the last name of Erger.

We'll see....he looks very nonathletic to me, he is 6'6 and looks as if he can barely dunk. If you are 6'6 and can shoot it and playing in the equivalent to Div. 4 it would be hard to not average 26.

Yeah, something like that.
