Student Section

Post by CharlotteFalcon »

Not sure if any one else watched the Duke vs. Mich. St game last night on ESPN but I was really impressed with their student section. They were loud, energetic, knowledgable, and didnt use any vulgar language (that I could hear through the TV). In my opinion they are the model that ALL school student sections should aim for.

I believe that AA has the potential to be better than the Cameroon Crazies due to the closeness of the players to the students. It would be awesome if our students were that into the games.

Ahhhh, well, I love AA and all, I really do, but I'm not sure there's a school in the country that can match Cameron Indoor Stadium as far as the student section is concerned. I've been in AA for some crazy games, as a student for four years and multiple times after that. But after experiencing several games at Duke, it takes the cake! You will never, ever walk into Cameron Indoor Stadium and see 1,500 fans for a home game. I don't care if it's a break or not. What you also can't really see at Cameron is, the side across the court from the side you see from TV also has students along side of it. Plus, they are behind the basket.

I will say this much, when AA is full, and when we get the electricity going, AA can be awesome. But Cameron is like that all game, for every game. Not just for a few games a year, or for stretches during the game. I challenge each and every student to make AA as tough as it can be. But to even get mentioned like Cameron, we've got a lot of work to do. Yeah, I know, AA is the Cameron of the MAC. But being the Cameron of the MAC and being like Cameron are two very different things.

This is not at all a dig on BG. This applies to almost every school in the country. I've been to Kentucky, North Carolina, Maryland....they can't hold anything to Cameron. As much as I dislike Duke basketball - it really is awesome.

Similar to how being the Shaq of the MAC and being like Shaq are two entirely different things? LOL

Cameron Indoor Stadium might be as old if not older than Anderson. And you don't hear anyone complaining about getting a new arena I guess the remodling in '86 didn't hurt and neither does winning.

Walking into Cameron, it looks even smaller in person than it does on TV. You find yourself asking, how do they fit 9,314 people in here? But they do. They have done some renovations to Cameron recently that are nice, but for the most part, the renovations are outside of the interior of the arena. They added a "Hall of Fame" to one side of the arena, a new administration tower with coaches offices right next to Cameron (but it's connected), and some locker room renovations to the other side of the building, etc. But for the most part, the insides are very much the same. Duke put in one of those flex-type floors and added some nice woodwork inside in recent years. But if you knocked down the north wall at BG's AA and added seats in that end too, you'd pretty much have what Cameron looks like. It would still have a lot of small differences, but the gist of it would be similar.

The one thing that cracks me up the most at Cameron is where the TV announcers and high cameras shoot from. At BG, our score's table is courtside between the player benches and our press row is up at the top of AA. We usually put the TV announcers in the student section. At Duke, they also have a score's table between the benches, but their press row runs courtside for the entire length of the floor on the other side of the floor. The TV announcers at Duke literally sit almost in the rafters! Seriously. There is an old stand that runs along the bottom of the roof at the top of the gym (it sits above and behind the same side as the players benches and score's table) that is access by climbing up these old rickety ladders! I am not kidding. When you get up there, you have nowhere to move and you are hanging above the people sitting below you, right under the arch of the steels girders that make up the roof. It gets hot as heck up there too. So when they cut to the TV announcers doing the game and they are sweating, it's from having to climb up into that area and all the heat that rises to the top. It's prettty funny.

Cameron is a must see for any college hoop lover. Even if you hate Duke, it's still very cool. From the old baskets that hand from the ceiling, to the Cameron Crazies camping outside in Krzyzewski-ville, it's a must see.

We swung by there the weekend BG football played at NC State a few years ago. The thing that cracked me up was the "upper deck" in the ends had carpeted floors! That and the big wooden shutters on the windows. I hate Duke like anything, but wandering that building was almost surreal. From the outside, you'd think it was a lecture hall or a church. We asked someone walking where it was at, they pointed, and we were about 50 yards from the place, but had no idea!

And when you mentioned the hall of fame they added, it reminded me that Cameron Indoor was the first place I realized that the basketball player on the NCAA Men's hoops trophy is buck naked!!! *shudder*

TG1996, I know exactly what you mean about Cameron looking like a lecture hall or church. I kind of thought it looked like a little castle. It certainly blends right into the campus, it doesn't jump out at you like most basketball arenas do. For those that have never been to Duke, the campus is basically a stone-gothic style and that does apply to Cameron.

Women's basketball is like watching Sea Turtles run the 100m dash. I'm sorry, but no. Admittedly, there are some hot ladies on the team, and I'll watch them when they are scheduled immediately before a Men's game (its the only way I can get my seats).

I just cannot stomach women's basketball, sorry.

Didn't hit a nerve, but I will make my opinion on Women's hoops known. I root for them, and wish them well. I respect the hard work that they put in, which I'm sure rivals that of any men's sport. I just cannot stand watching it.

I'm probably being shallow and sexist, but that's all I can say. The only reason I would EVER watch it is because they're hot...which is probably MORE shallow :)

I used to feel the same way as you hammb. I went to a game last year with my little girl because I thought it would be good for her. She'd been to football and men's basketball games and I wanted her to see that there were opportunities for girls and women other than being a cheerleader or a dance squad member (not that I have a problem with those organizations, they do a great job representing the university).

I actually became a fan. They play a bit slower then the men and a little closer to the floor, but there are some very talented ladies on that team. If Kevin Netter had Ali Mann's toughness and focus, he WOULD be in the NBA.
I had much more respect for the women's team mental approach to the game than the men's. I think Dan has turned that situation around this for the men, but that doesn't diminish the respect I have for the (for lack of a better term) basketball sensibility that the women have.

Oh...Kate Achter may be the most talented player to show up on this campus in years..

Kate is an awesome penetrator and from what I hear has a good head on her shoulders. She's a little too fast for her own good right now and tends to overpenetrate a la tene lewis of last year. But I have no doubt she'll correct that by midseason and be the next lindsay austin. Man I still miss lindsay

P.S. We need bigger fan support at the games this year. All you ziggies that read this come give these ladies a shot. I used to hate women's basketball and actually fell asleep at a liberty game at MSG, but these girls are fun to watch when they are on, which is most of the time the last year +

Women's basketball is pure basketball, they guard and hustle on defense and know how to make solid bounce pass.

Plus, if it weren't for the Voll era success, I may never have gotten to see a BGSU team play in the NCAA tournament.

When BG hosted Cinci, Florida, and Creighton, Anderson Arena was ELECTRIC.
