Reality Check Tonight

Post by Rollo83 »

I made the trip from Strongsvlle back to BG tonight for the OU game. It was the first time I've seen us play in person this year.

I was shocked at the talent level of both these teams. I've been following BG basketball for over 35 years and have seen every game at the MAC Tournament during its 11 year run in Cleveland. I can't remember seeing a BG or OU team this void of quality players. I don't think you could combine this year's BG and OU teams and have them finish in the top half of the league from 5 or 10 years ago.

I know the MAC is down right now, but I didn't realize just how far its dropped. I can't think of one BG team from the last 30 years that this current team could beat? And OU had absolutely no inside play and no impact players.

Nice for BG to get the win but this was bad basketball all around. What's even scarier is that the two teams are middle of the pack MAC ball clubs. I hate to think of the teams below them.

The MAC is scary bad-when there is not unrealistic talk of the MAC tournament champ coming from the West and that team being NIU, you know things are grim.

The talent level may not be the greatest but this is the best the team has looked since I came here in 2004. The first have was interesting to say the least, but I came away from AA feeling great last night and I'm sure a lot of other falcon fans did too. I haven't seen us defeat Ohio too many times since I started paying attention. Seemed to me last night the only thing that kept us from really pulling away from the kittens was some very shoddy officiating. I thought it was a good game. Exciting and entertaining, and judging by the crowd in the second half I wasn't the only one.

You can only play your schedule and that exactly what they are doing and looks like ORR has them ready for conference play... I think this team found its identity... I think the coaching staff thought OP could be a dominate Big Man this year and lead the team in scoring unfortunatley that is not in the cards for OP. The adjustment has been made and ORR has told Brown and Thomas to let it fly... and it seems to be working.

Not saying the game wasn't entertaining or that I didn't enjoy a Falcon victory. I just noting that the talent level on the floor last night is vastly inferior to past years in the MAC.

As far as this being "the best the team has looked since 2004," I can't agree. We went 18-11 in 2004-2005 and last year (2008-2009) we went 19-14 with an NIT apperance. I also hate the ball screen offense that we run (and about 90% of the rest of college basketball). Polk and Larson were no offensive threats down low even with OU's lack of height in the post.

At the end of the game Larson seemed to finally catch the concept of the pick and roll as he was constantly coming open off the pick and got a couple good feeds.

I didn't say the talent level was great on this team. And who knows what our record will be at the end of the year so throwing out records from 0405 and 0809 doesn't make sense. I'm merely saying that the team looks better than it has since I have started watching them. I do believe this team is better than last year's squad though. Last year we lost a lot of games we should have won in ooc play and this year we took care of business. Thats what better teams do, so I feel this is a better team.

Good game last night,it was all good except for the terrible officiating,i still can't figure out how BG went from having two fouls to having 10 in about 5 or 6 minutes!
I nearly lost my voice last night yelling at the stupid officials.
something totally random to point out,i was sitting by the score or announcer table, whatever it is called i looked up behind me and to the left i could of swear that i saw the miz from wwe or somebody that looked alot like him! but that's not point of this post ,the terrible officiating that went on last night. Aren't mac officials supposed to be impartial? at least i thought so!
There can be only ONE!

gmartin, what difference does it make if dustinxtreme was standing or sitting? i noticed you said something in the other thread too. i guess people like to give him a hard time... CLASSY. RIGHT?

our basketball team does not have the most talent, but they do try hard. it was an important win last night because Ohio is struggling and now we are one game out of first. if we win 95% of our home games and half or more of our road games, we SHOULD be a contender for the title again. The way this team seems to play on the road in league play, i think there is a good chance we will be around the top of the table. jakubowski is finally stepping up on the offensive end. thomas and brown have proven they will get points. our bench isn't deep and that could be a problem. if our inside game was better i would be a lot happier, but between polk, marshall, and larsson, one of them will have good game. i think most of the games will be close this year, and this team has improved a lot the last three games, so im excited about that.

The reason I asked if he was standing or sitting is because of how he was bashing the BG fans a few weeks ago. Here is one of his messages.

DustinXtreme Post subject: The ladies did alright last nightPosted: Wed Dec 02, 2009 11:03 am

Not their best game ever played but hey a win is a win.
only 5 people actually stood up for the whole game.
at least i am showing my support for the team

He went on to say over and over for days that ONLY TRUE FANS stand up during the game. Only fans who stand show their support. And then yesterday he said he wanted to start a B.S. chant directed towards the refs. Dustin has a lot of growing up to do. Ripping on the fans and then want to show his true class and start a chant like that? Dustin has also had issues on other message boards like other posters have mentioned. So when he slipped up and said he was sitting down, when only TRUE FANS stand up, I just couldn't resist my comment.
