Lose to OU!
Not so say go out and lose to OU on the road but I think a #10 seed is better than a #9 seed, that's what we are playing for in this game with OU. I would rather play a West team on the road with a chance if we win to play the West Champ (#2 seed) in Cleveland. A #9 seed playing at the #8 seed gets you a game against Kent or Akron. I think BG can beat either but I would rather play on the other side of the braket against a EMU or CMU.

Re: Lose to OU!
Eh, gotta beat whoever you play to move on and the title, most likely, runs thru Akron and/or Kent.

Interesting as I was thinking the exact same thing. It does seem like an easier road with a loss to OU. But I would be disheartened if that was the approach by any team....
Re: Lose to OU!
I don't care if winning the next game would make us play Kansas first versus playing NJIT, I would never want a team to even think that losing would be the better option, and I don't think fans should either. If we're gonna win the tournament we have to beat them all anyway.

Let's play all of our freshmen and use that excuse if we lose to OU. That excuse has worked for Toledo all year. It's going to be tought to win two straight road games. Let's go all our for the one that counts and give some starters a rest. Haynes and McElroy where are you? On a side note, I never have understood why we wouldn't red-shirt a player like DaVon Haynes. He has never "sniffed" the court and we are wasting a year for him/team. He's 6'7" and we need that next year when our 3 seniors leave.

Re: Lose to OU!
I am pretty sure that players can receive red-shirts retroactively so long as they do not see any playing time. Can anyone tell us if that is right or wrong?

I'm pretty sure he is being redshirted! I'll check it out.cowboyjoe wrote:Let's play all of our freshmen and use that excuse if we lose to OU. That excuse has worked for Toledo all year. It is my understanding that Haynes is being redshirted and that is why he hasn't been seen the court. From inside sources, I hear it is quite a site to see him DUNK OVER OP in practice!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Lose to OU!
Yes, players can be redshirted retroactively pending they don't play X number of minutes/appear in X number of games.VDub26Falcon wrote:I am pretty sure that players can receive red-shirts retroactively so long as they do not see any playing time. Can anyone tell us if that is right or wrong?
Sometimes redshirts will be delcared up front so players know they won't be playing. Sometime, things pan out, and player hasn't gotten in for 20 games, and they'll redshirt them then.
I'm sure Orr has talked with Haynes about being redshirted. He'll still have 4 years of eligibiliy after this season.
Re: Lose to OU!
This is pretty accurate, but I'm pretty sure X = 1. If they play a single minute in a single game I don't believe they are eligible for a red shirt, under normal circumstances. Injuries, obviously, change that.cph2133 wrote:Yes, players can be redshirted retroactively pending they don't play X number of minutes/appear in X number of games.VDub26Falcon wrote:I am pretty sure that players can receive red-shirts retroactively so long as they do not see any playing time. In the case of Haynes I've been under the impression all year that we were planning on redshirting him, which is why he wasn't playing.
Re: Lose to OU!
My guess is that we're keeping him on the bench in case of emergency, i.e. season ending injury to one of the bigs. Now that we are at this point in the season, though, he wouldn't see the floor unless OP, Larson, and Marschall all foul out of the MAC Championship game and we still have a reasonable chance to win. Even then, It would be iffy.hammb wrote:This is pretty accurate, but I'm pretty sure X = 1. As an example of this we can look back on, we didn't make the announcement that we were redshirting Kevin Netter his freshman year until a couple games in. If I remember correctly, he dressed the first few but never saw any action. After the announcement, he wore street clothes on the bench for the remainder of the season.
LONG LIVE THE MONGOOSE!!
Re: Lose to OU!
That's my inclination too. He's dressing for emergencies, but as long as he doesn't play he's still able to be redshirted.Matty B wrote:My guess is that we're keeping him on the bench in case of emergency, i.e. season ending injury to one of the bigs. I'd be shocked if we saw him play at this point, unless like you said it was a desperate situation.

You're right, injuries are the only reason you can get a redshirt after playing. I do know that proving injury (for your first redshirt), isn't difficult to do.
A friend played college football. Played in the first few games, and the coaches came to him and said "you're injured if anyone from the NCAA asks" and got his redshirt.
Medical redshirts can only be granted if a player plays in less than 20% of their teams games (according to wikipedia, so take it for what it's worth).
Re: Lose to OU!
Judging by the first half of play, it looks like we're not going to have a problem at all losing to Ohio.....OSUFALCON wrote:Not so say go out and lose to OU on the road but I think a #10 seed is better than a #9 seed, that's what we are playing for in this game with OU.
