Scrimmage today?
Re: Scrimmage today?
Didn't make it back in time but from what I heard Austin Calhoun was simply AMAZING. I myself am waiting for a report. Just left the football game and it looks like 5000 others have followed. Can't wait for bball to begin

A'uston (from here on out only known as "The Apostrophe") Calhoun WAS amazing! I'm pretty sure he was 9 for 9 before he missed a shot, midrange jumpers, 3s, and a dunk in there as well. I only stayed for the first half of the scrimmage because I had a very bored 22 month old girl and an even more bored wife with me.gmartin wrote:Didn't make it back in time but from what I heard Austin Calhoun was simply AMAZING. The other one who REALLY impressed me was Cameron Black. The kid is going to be a flat-out STUD by the time he's done here, and it looks like it could happen sooner rather than later. I sat next to Cam's dad.
And if the walk-on, Wiley Roberts, is really 5'7"... well... let's just say he's not, OK?
Other generalizations... we are a FAST team and we are a long-lean team. Amazing the transition in the overall makeup of the team in just one year. Larson and Polk took their bulk and inertia with them and the team, as a whole, is that much more nimble.
I think our weakness will be at the point and 2-guard positions... wings and posts though, we seem strong.
I promised myself I wouldn't get my hopes up based upon one practice/scrimmage... but I have. We have the pieces, we're going to see what kind of coaching staff we have this year. If JoeJak can provide some senior leadership and steady ball-control, we're going to be strong by the time our 6 newcomers are seasoned...
Oh... and John Floyd was one of the referees. Also in attendance, Associate MAC Commissioner for Basketball, former BGSU assistant, and one-time Ralph Sampson alley-ooper, Ricky Stokes.

You suffer from a little known, and even less studied genetic condition. I have witnessed this in at least one other fan of your institution and it was not pretty- resulted in such gems as "Jason Crump will be the dominant offensive player in the MAC" and "I have two words for you- Willie Ladson!". I can put you in touch with a good therapist.ZiggyZoomba wrote: I promised myself I wouldn't get my hopes up based upon one practice/scrimmage...

Sign me up, because I was under the delusion that "A'uston Calhoun" was a made-up name meant solely to tease BG basketball fans.h2oville rocket wrote:I can put you in touch with a good therapist.ZiggyZoomba wrote: I promised myself I wouldn't get my hopes up based upon one practice/scrimmage...

Like Reggie Harwell.
Count me as really excited as well. To know that an absolute glaring weakness/unknown will be a strength is a huge plus and has me thinking this year could be a good one. I would much rather count on veteran guards to step up their play then freshman. We are in a good place.

I see JoJak thriving much more in the transition game.

Re: Scrimmage today?
After hearing this news about how good the scrimmage went I am SOO excited for this year and the years to come. I think with the addition of the new arena we can get better recruits in. Lets hope coach Orr can get something going this year. Can't wait to go to the Anderson again. I'm gonna miss it after we move on. Lots and lots of memories in there. My Grandmother used to work in there and I spent a lot of time in there as a kid visiting her. I'm really gonna miss this place but am excited to move on as well.

Re: Scrimmage today?
Well color me excited. This football season has been awful, so we need SOMETHING to get excited for. It would be really awesome to see a BG team running the floor again. It's been awhile since that's really been a big part of our game. We'll see, though, because it seems like we've talked about it every year since Orr got here, and we still haven't seen it be a major part of what we do.
Nice to hear that we have a kid who can light it up in a dunk contest type situation as well. In year's past it's seemed as though half our roster couldn't even dunk, let alone with the athleticism to do so in spectacular fashion
Looking forward to seeing Calhoun & Black as well. They seem like talented players, let's hope they can turn the talent into some production, especially Calhoun. He needs to keep his head on and start playing
With Black we'll see plenty of growing pains, I'm sure, but hopefully he's got the talent to show us some flashes this year as well!
Looking forward to basketball season now!

Grant, what did you see from C Black? From some of the scouting video available online, it looks like his footwork/quickness is WAY beyond any "big" we've had in a long long time.
IF (damn that IF) we can get solid contributions from Calhoun and Black, I think we go from say 14 wins to 18 to 20 wins.
GO BG!

Re: Scrimmage today?
I think what I liked most about Cam was the potential I saw in him. He's an incoming freshman and he already showed a lot of polish with his hands and footwork. Plus he could move up and down the court with the rest of the guys when they ran... no "reverse cherry picking" from this big! He looked to be able to step back and hit the mid-range jumper too, which would be a really nice tool to have in a post-player's arsenal!
It's really hard to judge in a glorified practice setting though. We'll see as the season moves on, but I anticipate him being a starter and that'll make him grow up real quick.
