I'd have to agree with your question, even though Factman answered as to their location on the bench. I'm a bit curious why EVERYONE didn't get at least a "look see" in a 30+ Pt. win. Hard to believe, especially from what we've heard about Henderson, that he wouldn't have got some minutes.

Only reason I'd see is if this were some sort of disciplinary action being taken by the coaching staff...otherwise, why not give all the kids some floor time?

Personally, I don't post scouting reports/game reports anymore because people just pick them apart and talk about how bad we are. *shrug* I go to the games, I enjoy them. I don't feel like letting others spoil that love. If others in attendance want to post reports, they have my blessing... but seriously... all this forum does is pick and rip... I'm an optimist, so I'm avoiding that kind of dialog. (not saying that's what you'd do, Globetrotter... just saying that's the overall "voice" on here anymore... and if it was posted for you, someone else would chime in for sure)

understandable, I guess, but as an eternal pessimist conditioned by years as a BG and Bengals fan sometimes all I have to be optimistic about is hope that we are better. Especially after what seemed like a pretty horrific opening loss.

It did look like Danny McElroy started along with Black. That would be an interesting lineup. I am not sure we have the depth in the post to do that nor am I sure that we want Scott Thomas guarding the other teams 2's all game (mabe ' can do that) but Eventually I think McBlack will be a great post duo.

Well I'll post some of my thoughts on the game. But of course it is kinda difficult to really get a gauge for our team when we've got so many guys playing more minutes than we've ever seen, and now they're doing so against a DII team. With that in mind I'll gladly post my thoughts...

Overall the first thought of the game was that if we shoot like this it's gonna be a long year. The first half (or I should say the first 15 minutes of the game) were absolutely brutal. Nobody could make anything. It didn't matter if it was close, far, open, or contested, NOTHING was going in. And I'm not talking about just not getting the bounces either, I'm talking ABYSMAL shooting that was nowhere near the basket. I don't know if it was jitters or what, but it was UGLY...the type of UGLY that could quite possibly dig yourself a hole that you cannot get out from against a D1 opponent later in the year.

After that stretch, however, we actually started making some shots and played fairly well. Again, against a lower division opponent, but from that point forward we took it to them like we should do. And we are VERY young. We started 3 Sophomores, a Freshman, and a Junior.

Cameron Black looks good. If any position is tough to really figure out against lower division competition it's the post spots, but I thought he looked very good. He boxes out, and even had some nice plays around the basket. He needs to dunk the ball though...I get tired of seeing 6'10 kids lay it in. I think there was one time he missed a bunny when he probably could have taken it stronger and dunked it. Still, looks pretty good, especially for a true freshman. Can't wait to see how he looks against D1 bigs. One thing I liked was that he's got a real good body already. He's not overweight and out of shape like true freshman Otis Polk was, and he's not a skinny rail that needs to bulk up to play the post like Netter was. He could be fun to watch as the year(s) go on.

Craig Sealy was the other freshman who looked good, but unlike Black, he really needs to bulk up. He looks like a great athlete at 6'6, but the only real offensive touches he had were in the post. He made some very quick spins to get baskets out of the post yesterday, but against D1 competition, I'm thinking he's going to struggle that close to the basket. I didn't see him really attempt to penetrate off the wing, I hope that is part of his game.

McElroy did some nice things, but I'm afraid he's still going to get overpowered in the paint. He did show some nice range and good touch on some outside jumpers. If he can continue to hit those jumpers he could really help draw the defense out and open things up underneath.

A'uston Calhoun....what is there to say, this dude likes to SHOOT the ball. If the ball finds its way into his hands in the half court set he's probably gonna find a way to put it up. If he starts hitting some shots that'll be a great thing. The way he shot Friday & yesterday? It wasn't pretty. He started hitting some shots in the 2nd half, but still didn't look real good. Hopefully as he gets more comfortable we'll start to see these shots falling for him.

Crawford looked pretty good in transition. He had quite a few steals and did a real good job pushing it up the court off those steals. He's quick end to end and he got most of his points of breakaway layups. He didn't do a whole lot in the half court. He's a good change of pace guy, but I don't think he's a full time point guard.

Speaking of point guards, I don't think we HAVE a good full time point guard. JoeJak was good passing the ball, and made a few shots, but I didn't see anything new out of him, really. He can play against the likes of Ohio Dominican, but I don't see anything to suggest he's ready to break out as a Senior when we start playing tougher competition. He'll hit some jumpers, and have some good games, but he's not the consistent threat penetrating I'd like to see at the position.

Thomas, like the rest of the team, looked brutally bad the first 15 minutes of the game, but ended up finishing pretty decent making some big jumpers.

Dee Brown & Kraus both played quite a bit, but neither did anything noteworthy. Erger played quite a bit as the game wound down and didn't really do anything of note either.

One of the walk ons came in late and put up probably the ugliest shot I've ever seen at Anderson Arena.

Oh, and JimmyZ can shoot the rock! :)

All in all it was just nice to be back in Anderson watching them play again. I saw a lot of good things I liked, and a few bad things. Tough to really get a feel for things though, as the competition level was pretty low. So there ya have it, feel free to rip me to shreds and talk about how much we still suck ;) With a HUGE bulk of our minutes are going to freshmen & sophomores, I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy watching them play...hopefully they'll get better as the year goes on :)

Thanks for the writeup. I really apreciate it and will appreciate them going forward. So who started? By my take it was Kraus, Thomas, ', Mc, and Black? Surprises me that neither of the veteran guards were out there. If you had to make a prediction on our record (Which I know is impossible to really do) what would it be? About .500, below, above?

I hope coach Orr stays with the younger lineup. If they have more skill than our upperclassmen AND they hustle, I say let them play through any mistakes.

I say above .500 on the record 16 to 18 wins

The starting lineup was

Crawford
Kraus
Thomas
McElroy
Black

Of course Crawford committed a foul 1 minute into the game and was immediately replaced by Jakubowski.

I think this team could make a run towards .500. I'm not sure what the state of the MAC will be this year.

What I saw last night was some talent, but we really struggled shooting for a LONG stretch last night. Also, I know Calhoun was getting rave reviews in the preseason stuff, but if he continues to shoot so poorly he really would be a liability more than an asset. He's a guy that always seemed to be looking for his own shot. I'm okay with that, because we really haven't had a goto scorer recently, but if he's just throwing up prayers that's not good either.

We're also very young. I expect Crawford, Kraus, McElroy, Black, and Sealy will all play major minutes this year. That's a 3 sophomores and 2 freshmen, and of that group only Crawford really got much playing time last season.

It's gonna take this team a while to figure out what its identity is, but I do think there's some talent there. It's going to be fun watching them grow together...I don't think .500 is out of the picture. As always, MAC basketball is really about getting yourself ready for the tournament, and if the team gels a bit as the year goes on who knows. My biggest worry for them is, as it has been for YEARS, I'm not sure we're strong enough in the backcourt. We still don't really have a guard that I actually like. We just haven't brought in a guard that can really create (for himself or his teammates) since Lewis/Wright. I'm afraid that's going to be our downfall again this season.

I was hoping that would be Henderson. Or next years guard (If anyone wants to make a trip to Canton I am up for it). Any ideas why we didnt see the other three guys on the roster. Certainly seems curious that we put in a walk on over ther other 2 schollie guys.

Yeah, I don't know man. The walk on only came in for the final minute or two in a total blowout. It's always nice to let kids get a shot to come in the game, even if it garbage time. They work just as hard as everybody else.

The only thing I can say for the other guys is that they must not be ready. I haven't seen any practices/scrimmages or anything, so I can only defer to the coaching staff. I'm sure if they were ready to contribute they'd be given that opportunity. As for why they don't get in during garbage time I guess maybe they want to hold onto a redshirt until they prove that they're going to be an asset this year? That's just a guess, though I really don't know.

Not being privy to anything that goes on behind the scenes, I can only put our trust in the coaches and assume if those guys were better than the guys on the court they'd be given that opportunity.
