Optimism v Pessimism: Future post

Post by Globetrotter »

This post is about the future and I know some people hate future posts with 10 games to go in a season so I want to warn you before you go further.

2012-13 should be a fun year despite the losses of 3 key guys in the rotation. I am cautiously optimistic about 2013-14 and beyond as well.

Next years starters could look something like this...based off this years minutes
1 Crawford-Sr (29.6)
2 Kraus-Sr (18.0)
3 Sealey-Jr (14.5)
4 Calhoun-Sr (27.1)
5 Black-Jr (19.1)

With returning starters at C, PF and PG the real questions are at SF and SG. We are going to lose a ton of offense from the 2 and 3 and the team needs to improve its shooting from the perimeter as well.
SF: Sealey has been playing more 4 then 3 but I think he is athletic enough to play the 3 although it will hurt our shooting from the outside, which is not exactly a strength as it is. Erger, Orr and Henderson are options and recruit Spencer Parker might fit here is as well.
SG: Kraus has to be the leader but his one dimensional game won't be something we want on the court for too long. What we really need at the 2 is a scoring threat. We have 3 current Freshman who fit that bill in HS, Henderson (27.7 points), Clarke (17.4 points) and Orr (21.6 points). Of the three Clarke seems to have flashed the most potential but he has earned a spot on the bench recently. Orr seems like at best a solid smart utility guy and Henderson I have no idea about. Erger(26.7) and Kraus(24) were both top scorers in HS and have not shown that ability at this level.

Beyond next year I think we have no real rocks we can count on. For how bad the program has been it could really take a fall based on the last two years of recruiting. Clarke seems like the only pretty sure thing so far.
JRs
Sealey
Optimism:Absurdly athletic and has flashed ability to shoot from inside the three. Could see a ton of minutes at the 4 and 3 next year.
Pessimism:Minutes have been incredibly sporadic and he has not had a great game lately.

Black
Optimism:Has flashed ability to be a pretty studly defender in the post and when he is aggressive he has a nice offensive game.
Pessimism:Doesn't have much athleticism with his post offense, plays passive and has reported history of lower leg injuries.

SOs
Clarke
Optimism:See second half at MSU. He was very active and athletic on the floor.
Pessimism:Has played sparingly the last few games and has not shown great ball handling or scoring ability. Orr does not seem to have much confidence in him.

Orr
Optimism:Seems to have hit the ground running and does not seem to make freshman mistakes.
Pessimism:Was not highly recruited despite his stats and status. Seems limited offensively and athletically. Ceiling seems low and floor high.

Henderson
Optimism:Flashy scorer and reported athleticism in pregame warmups
Pessimism:Been in the system for 2 years and has not cracked the lineup despite the fact that a scoring 2 is exactly what this team needs. Was not highly recruited despite his stats and status.

Rorie
Optimism:Big, athletic and active
Pessimism:Did not have great numbers even in HS. Redshirted which is never good. Some assume he was added simply to get Clarke here.

Holmes
Optimism:Has been scoring, rebounding and blocking shots at a very high level in Juco
Pessimism:Went to Juco, was not highly recruited out of HS. Stats are coming against Juco.

Freshman
Parker
Optimism:Seems long and athletic and scored quite a bit in HS and is doing so for his talent laden Prep squad
Pessimism:Went the prep school route. Guys from last years squad are not doing much for the teams they are on now.

This is all really mental masturbation but I am a little concerned that the So and Fr classes are full of guys who were not recruited highly, went to prep school, junior college, are a coaches son who may not be here or were redshirted their freshman year. I can't name very many great players at BG who succeeded after going these routes. The ones that have were guys like Clarke who were highly recruited. I am afraid we have too many Germain Fitches, Mawel Solers and not enough Keith McCleods
