What I would do if I won some sort of contest and they named me head coach for 2013-2014. Get more PGs, run more, get connected with the community,
My lineup would be.
1. Tisdale-RETIC
2. Clarke-Denny-Henderson
3. Orr-Parker
4. Holmes-Sealy-Mayleben-Recruit
5. Black-Gomez
We have at least 2 current offers out there and I think both are good.
Joe Retic 6-3 G from Owens, Freshman who has 3 years of experience left.
6'3 G Joe Retic (Owens CC) holds offers from UIC, BGSU, IUPUI, Chicago St., & Washington State-they are doing an in-home visit this weekend
Cullen Russo 6-9 F from Minnesota
He has a Miami Florida offer. Not sure why he wouldn’t take it. He looks like a ridiculous athlete.
My guess is we get Retic and don't get Russo. I would recruit an athletic big man. I really don't think Gomez or Mayleben will be anything but space eaters. I hope I am wrong but I hedge my bets.
1. I give Tisdale the PG job from day 1 and tell him it's his to lose. I love the idea of grabbing a guy in Tisdale and Retic who have both played a lot of PG. Tisdale is pretty long and athletic so I assume he can guard big. With Clarke-Tisdale and Retic you have 3 guys who have seen time at PG and I would actually try to play them together at times.
2. Playing them together at times. I would have 2 lineups.
1 Retic-Clarke-Tisdale-Sealy-Holmes would be the transition lineup where we would look to run the entire time. Fans would like it, the players would like it and it would be exciting. Should we get Rectic and he and Tisdale be as advertised this might be the best group of PG type guys we have had since I have been paying attention.
2 Retic/Clarke/Tisdale-Denny-Orr-Holmes-Black would be the half court slow it down lineup. I have no idea who should play the one but the other four spread the floor and could run a set offense solid.
Note:Retic would have 3 years left.
3. I would make a commitment to the community. Little things like going to local events would be good but I would do other tiny things as well. Go to the women's games and walk around the crowd and shake hands. Wish falcon club members happy birthday with a birthday video from the coach at half time. Celebrate long time falcon season ticket holders at half time.
4. I would make the game an event outside of the game. I would give the students a reason to come. We play like 15 home games. Instead of the stale dance team or in combination of it I would get the student body involved and have an American Idol style or America's got talent style competition at half time with students. Singers, Dancers, Jugglers whatever. Make it a tournament, let people vote and give the winner at the end of the season some sort of scholarship. Do 2 a game at half time and make them be sponsored by a BG organization so that that organization comes and roots them on.
5. I would make a commitment to Northwest Ohio. Every year I would offer a walk-on spot to someone from that area. This year it would be TJ Metzger from Ottawa Glandorf. 6-1 Guard from Ottawa Glandorf who had nine threes in the final and they won. Nice athlete as he was all state in Basketball and Soccer. I would really commit to this with the expectation that this player will at some point become a rotation player and we will offer him a scholarship for his Jr and Sr years. I am pretty frustrated by the use of our walk-ons. There doesn't seem to be much of a plan for them to ever be anything other then a practice player. I would try to change that. You might be giving up 2 schollies but you would guarantee 4 players from the Northwest Ohio are on every team with 2 walk ons and 2 scholarship players. I think that the connection that it would create in the northwest ohio community would be a great benefit and outweigh any negatives here.
Then next year you would have
1. Tisdale 2-RETIC 3
2. Clarke 4-Denny 2-Henderson 4
3. Orr 4-Parker 3
4. Recruit 2-Mayleben 2
5. Holmes 4-Gomez 4
