Its June, if this happens all you are getting is Stone, Hopson, or Twigg as interim head coach for a year, which I'm sure some would be against, but others would be for just because it isn't Orr. As for Lutz I loved when his Charlotte teams went up against the 90s and early 00s Cincinnati teams, those were fun games. He is a retread though and I'm not sure if that's the route we should go again.

None of that follows logically. It's just a. Cliche. Just because most teams do it doesn't mean you can't do it. How would this team specifically be hurt for 2013-2014 if we replaced Orr? It literally can't get worse.

I wouldn't rule out a retread just because one didn't work. I think that's narrow minded. Just make sure the coach has a solid offense. Can recruit and doesn't praise his lord every other sentence.

All I'm saying on the replacing Orr thing is don't expect a permanent head coach for 13-14 if it were to happen (which I don't think it will), it would more then likely be an interim coach with one of the three assistants.

As for retread coaches for me its just depends on who we are talking about. Like I said I like Bobby Lutz and would be for that hire. That's just me though. I know some around the board are very anti-retread coach, especially after hiring a retread in Orr didn't work. I admit I'm more wary of the retread route because of Orr's failing, but if its someone I think can have this program winning again I'll be for it. As for praising the lord he can praise his lord as much as he wants if he gets us back to the NCAA Tournament

This might be a perfect storm scenario to get lutz as all other suitors are gone.

I don't think it will happen but you're absolutely right. Name Stone or Hopson interim head coach. Let them shake things up X's and O's wise and attempt to motivate a heretofore uninspired group. Recruiting would be strange but it's going to be strange anyway as this is basically a one-year proposition for Orr as well. What's the worst that could happen?

It would be unprecedented, but a MAC school keeping a mens basketball coach that loses every year is virtually unprecedented in its own right, money be damned.

As the new AD, Kingston has plenty of work to do and he's not even been to his introductory press conference. Orr is already preparing for the 2013 - 14 season. I'd say there's an approximately 0.001% chance that anyone other than Orr is the head coach in 13 - 14. He'll be given a set of expectations and criteria for success. And I'd guess that there's around a 0.001% that Orr is still the coach for 2014 - 15, but I'm getting a bit ahead of myself now ...

The worst case scenario would be that you appoint one of those guys as the interim and the team plays over their head this year. Your hand is then almost forced to grant him a shot as the head coach where he could fail miserably.

i.e. the Romeo Crennel in KC situation.

If you were going to buy out Orr (and you absolutely SHOULD have) then to me it should have already been done. At this point you may as well just say F*** the '13-'14 season we're shopping for a coach starting NOW.

Of course if you told me that the new AD would be smart enough to not care what the record is this year he just wants Orr out of the building? Then I guess I'd be okay with it, but I don't know that it really accomplishes much of anything. I just know that I don't want any of those other guys around for the long term either...I think we've seen enough (or lack thereof) to know that we don't have good coaching, PERIOD.

I'm wary of the interim scenario for the same reasons, but think of it this way. Anything less than a MAC championship or a spectacularly impressive run would mean someone else, and if they do accomplish that with the current roster maybe they deserve the job. No two or three game improvement squeezing blood from a stone. Total transformation or bust.

I completely concur that coaching and general program management are endemic problems that the new AD should quickly be able to diagnose and eliminate as soon as possible. It's just hard to believe we have to sacrifice another entire entire season before that process can occur.

I didnt really think about that but its interesting. I was saying that although late in the traditional coaching timeline, this scenario we have is set up perfectly for firing Orr and hiring Lutz.

People might say that recruiting would be hurt. But how could it get any worse? We are eating 2 scholarships right now and have 2 more coming up next summer. Who is Orr going to draw?

There isn't an argument that the team will be too unprepared for the year, they can't even practice yet.

I just don't get the reason that we have to wait. Why can't you hire an outside coach now. This coach has connections to 2 pretty good candidates who are assistants at NC State. If I was him I would go under the radar to Lutz and then the other guy if Lutz didn't want it and say, what would it take to get you here this year. If they spurned his overtures than you eat the year. If not you are getting started on rebuilding the program an entire year early. There is no reason not to do that.

I agree it's unlikley, but there is no logical reason to not do it other than tradition.

Here is what Lutz will have to work with his first year

1 Clarke 4 Tisdale 2
2 Henderson 4 Denney 2
3 Orr 4 Parker 3
4 Mayleben 2
5 Holmes 4 Gomez 3

Plus 4 scholarships.

I have to think that even if Lutz is not hired within the next few weeks that he will be on the short list. The write up of him for NC State was glowing

Considered one of the top basketball minds in the nation, Bobby Lutz enters his second season on head coach Mark Gottfried's staff at NC State and his first year as associate head coach. Lutz was elevated to his current position on April 20, 2012.

The 54-year-old Lutz came to NC State after a season on the staff at Iowa State, where he helped the Cyclones earn their highest win total since 2005-06. Prior to his stint in Ames, Lutz served as the head coach at Charlotte from 1999-2010, where he led his alma mater to eight postseason appearances (five NCAA, three NIT) in his 12 years at the helm. He is the winningest coach in 49er history, posting a record of 218-158 and is the only coach in school history to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearance twice in his career.

A native of Catawba, N.C., Lutz led Charlotte to a school-record five 20-win seasons, averaged more than 18 wins a year and won three Conference USA titles (1999, 2001, 2004) in his tenure with the 49ers. He had four top 20 national recruiting classes and tutored 10 players who earned first-team all-conference honors. Five times in his career a Lutz-coached 49er squad knocked off a top-10 opponent, including a win over No. 3 Cincinnati in 1999. Five of the eight wins over top-10-ranked opponents in Charlotte's history came under Lutz's watch.

In 2005, Lutz was a finalist for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award.

Prior to being named head coach, Lutz was an assistant coach at Charlotte for three seasons (1996-98) assisting Jeff Mullins for one and working Mullins' successor, Melvin Watkins, for two year. The 49ers compiled a record of 56-35 and went to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments when Lutz was an assistant for Watkins.

Prior to his stint at Charlotte, Lutz molded Pfeiffer, a NAIA school in Misenheimer, N.C., into a national power as head coach from 1986-95. He posted a 181-91 record and qualified for six-straight NAIA Tournament berths, including three Final Four appearances. His teams had a .785 winning percentage (153-42) from 1990-95 and he developed 10 NAIA All-Americans.

During his 49ers tenure, he also was tabbed as the 2005 C-USA Coach of the Year by ESPN.com and CollegeInsider.com, and was named The Birmingham News' 1999 C-USA Coach of the Year.

Lutz graduated with "High Honors" from UNC Charlotte in 1980 with a degree in economics and psychology and a 3.82 GPA. He earned three other degrees: Lenoir-Rhyne, 1981 (A.B. Secondary Education); Winthrop, 1985 (M.A.T. Secondary Social Studies); Clemson, 1986 (M.A. Education - Administration & Supervision).

Lutz has been extremely active in off-the-court endeavors and goodwill campaigns in his successful career. He has served as the honorary chair of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light up the Night Campaign as well as the Coaches' Curing Kids' Cancer organization. In 2002, he was named the Carolinas' Father of the Year by the National Father's Day Council.

This guy is another option

http://www.gopack.com/sports/m-baskbl/m ... 50820.html

FWIW I think it's a perfect storm to get a guy like Lutz in here now before the start of the 2013-2014 season and. Lets do this! We won't get similar candidates next year when there are much better opportunitites open. Strike why the market is bad and we can get better candidates here. Not having an AD is a perfectly acceptable scenario to put off the coaching firing until June. Do it!
