I know we did not use two scholarships this season, which is boggles my mind along with everyone else I am sure, but do you think since this staff is essentially a lame duck they have stopped recruiting all together? Do we know of any offers out? Are we probably better off just not having them sign somebody? If they did can the new coach come in and not honor the scholarship? I would like to hear people's opinions on this especially this forums recruiting guru IMO, Globe

There is no reason for them to spend money recruiting

Build it, and they will come!

Is it possible the new AD has already told the coaching staff to sit on the scholarships because he wants to "evaluate" things at the end of the season before allowing this staff to use them?

Just get some Jucos or something. We will have 4 scholarships available for the new coach to recruit but he will be recruiting 4 guys from the left overs of everyone that didn't sign during the first period. then we get 4 years out of them. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Speaking of Jucos, it looks like at least somebody on BG staff was at Owens checking out players a couple weeks ago..

Has Owens always had kids go D1 every year? Seems like they have had a lot lately, what does it say that we haven't gotten anyone from there?

It IS a recipe for disaster.
And the main ingredient to that recipe is allowing your lousy coach to go into a lame duck season.
You're then left with 2 crappy options. You let your outgoing coach try to recruit and fill out a roster with players who may not fit what a new coach wants to do. Or you save the schollies for the new coach who will have a shortened season and miss out on the prime recruiting period to use those schollies.
It makes absolutely NO sense to let a college basketball coach go into a lame duck year unless you absolutely don't care about building a winning program.

I assume bobby lutz will be at least talked to next offseason. I am of the belief that you build solid teams at our level with transfers who didn't fit there first system. I checked out Nc states roster going into this year and they have three sophs. One is a sweet shooting 6-5 walk on who earned a scholarship this season. A likely candidate based on likely minutes. One is a point guard. A former McDonald's all American who didn't see a ton of time last year. He likely would have more suitors. The final is a forward who was all acc. Probably not moving.

I don' think there's any way we aren't going to be terrible for at least two more years. I understand why Orr is still here...you don't fire a guy and then walk out the door nor do you make firing a guy your first real decision...that doesn't make the situation any more enjoyable.

I think you almost have to go 1 or 2 jucos that first year. We would start 2014-2015 like this.
Pg Jehvon Clarke Sr. 6-1 - JD Tisdale So. 6-4 - DeMarkeo Lyshe Sr. 5-11
Sg Anthony Henderson Sr. 6-1 - Zach Denny So. 6-2
Sf Chauncey Orr Sr. 6-4 -
Pf Spencer Parker Jr. 6-7 - Garrett Mayleben So. 6-9
C Richaun Holmes Sr. 6-8 - Josh Gomez Jr. 6-10
And then
Pg JD Tisdale Jr. 6-4
Sg Zach Denny Jr. 6-2
Sf Spencer Parker Sr. 6-7
Pf Garrett Mayleben Jr. 6-9
C Josh Gomez Sr. 6-10
I would atleast try to get a Juco PF to play for 2014 and 2015.

Owens has one that MAC schools have offered...That is why I brought the question to the table...Can the staff sign a kid like this now? Or will we just have to wait for a new coach and hope he can snag a couple quality JUCOs and Freshman late when he takes over?

@ZachFleerLGHL: Owens CC Sophs Bik Gill, Tony Boykins, Freshman Edmond Early Jr will be guests of Bowling Green tonight in their game vs North Dakota
Saw this on twitter, atleast it was a good game to have recruits there. After looking around it looks like Gill has a lot of interest, especially in the MAC. Early is only a freshman but has an offer from UIC. Don't see much about Boykins besides his Bio on Owens website saying he averaged double figures and started every game as a freshman at Owens.
As always I turn to Globe our recruiting guru on what he thinks of these guys.

. Have not seen them yet but I think it was you who pointed out how great a pipeline Owens could be. Would love it if we started up there.

@dclarke_owens: 6'8" Owens Forward, Bik Gill is averaging 18 PPG, 14 rebs, and 5 blocks per game in conference. Has MM offers! @JucoRecruiting @scoopips
I know we had Gill on campus earlier this season, this actually looks like he'd be a GREAT recruit. Probably have no shot at him though with the state of our program. Also looked up Owens in general since we had a few other guys on campus as well. They are currently 17-4 and 4-0 in conference, former Director of Basketball Operations Dave Clarke really has it rolling up in Perrysburg.

If he was 2 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier he would be a perfect 5 for next year. As is I think he would be really really helpful in the paint anyway. We could really use a Cam Black type body at the 5 to keep Holmes clean though.
