Richaun Holmes almost singlehandedly wills the team to victory; misses game tying three pointer at the buzzer. Clarke turned the ball over with 9 seconds left down by two. Missed most of the game, final score was 46-43. We had 20 turnovers I believe.

Richaun Holmes is really good. If Brandon Pardon was the pg on this team it would be fun to watch. Although they were pretty gutty today

We have ZERO depth right now, we are essentially playing one guy off the bench and with 6 guys. Orr is out, Denny has been out, and Sealey is still out. They won't be able to last at this rate come mid-MAC season.

From what I heard Denny is healthy

BG now 6-6...IPFW at home Thursday. Those following the MAC closely...does this team have a chance to finish in the top half of the East?

I haven't really seen any of the other Mac teams yet freak (really haven't looked at their records even) but I just don't see how this team can possibly compete.

Their playing better basketball this year than in years past largely due to successfully pressing, and the growth of Holmes. Unfortunately we're so thin I just do t see how they can compete with the 2 games every week trudge through the Mac. If they get Denny and Sealey back it would help but right now they're basically playing only 6 guys...they can't keep that up all season.

Maybe they give you more scholarships for a reason?

I completely agree that he needs to deepen his bench some how. But.....Thad Matta has had very very short benches for years and been very successful.

I am also still trying to climb my way out of football season. But to answer your question, I have seen Akron, Kent State, Ohio and from the East. I have seen us play several times this year too, and no, I do not think we are better than any of those three. I also feel Buffalo is better than us, and I expect Buffalo to look better in MAC play than it has shown in the non-conference thus far. As miserable as Miami started out, they have at least shown signs of progress and I expect them to be the team we fight to stay out of the East basement. We'll probably split with them, but remember, this is also the the poor Miami team that romped us in the first round of the MAC Tournament on our home floor last year too in a game we expected to actually win.

I have seen the exact same kind of team yet again from us as we have for the last five years. A team with some athleticism, that struggles to shoot from outside, that struggles to score in the half court, that struggles to make free throws, that has little depth, that plays inside-out ad nauseam, and has a coach that makes little to no adjustments. It's the same, old, stuff. I do think Holmes is very solid and a potential All-MAC player, and I like Parker's aggressiveness, but Black continues to look lost offensively, Henderson is very inconsistent, Clarke is often out of control, Sealey is constantly injured, and Tisdale can't make a free throw to save his life. We have nearly zero depth as we're essentially utilizing a 6-man rotation right now.

That said, we could actually see a decent start to the MAC season. We open with 3 straight homes games vs EMU, NIU and CMU and it wouldn't surprise me if we went 2-1 or maybe even 3-0. But then the real meat of the schedule will bring us back down to earth and we'll fight Miami to stay out of the basement while the usual trio of Akron, Kent State and Ohio do their usual thing and roll along and into Cleveland to compete for a MAC Championship leaving us to ponder another head coaching change for all the opposite reasons as we did in football.

Black has great touch around the basket and a decent set of post moves.

The team is way more talented than I thought they would be when last season ended. Much of that is the play of Holmes. As normal for BG hoops, the D is excellent. If you hold a team to less than 50, you should win every time. I did not expect them to be .500 right now or have a winning recordat any time past the first few games so they have overachieved my dismal expectations. The obvious concern is the utter lack of depth. There is no way to go up against as talented or more talented teams each week in MAC play. They'll win some conference games no doubt but at some point before West play starts the lack of depth will show badly.

I don't believe we will beat EMU. They are a much stronger team this year. 7-4 with losses to Duke, UMass, Kentucky and Purdue. Purdue loss was by only 5 and they hung with Kentucky for a long time. BTW they have 11 transfers or JUCOs on their roster of 15. Like you I am pleasantly surprised of the team's early performance much of it do to Holmes development. Makes it even odder that he played so little last year.

Eastern like Toledo has fully adapted to the "new" college basketball. Transfers, transfers, and more transfers.

Or how about Ohio? They have made all kinds of noise in the MAC in recent years (three championship appearances in the last four years including two titles and a Sweet 16 run) fueled by transfers. They rode the back of former Indiana transfer Armon Bassett a few years on that incredible MAC Tournament Championship run as a 9-seed. Last year they had transfers from Ohio State and Missouri on the roster. This year their roster features transfers from Texas Tech, Saint Louis, Southern Illinois and two JUCO's. They also had a Kansas transfer that fell through. There's no question when you look at some of the better teams in the MAC in recent years, they have often featured a key transfer or two. We don't have them, but at least we stopped all the transfers we used to lose.
