First Game at The Stroh!

Post by ZuluWarrior »

Back on campus for the first time in years and attended the first half of the men's basketball game and the hockey game.

Starting with the positives. I have confidence the hockey program is on it's way back. I like how Coach Bergeron had the team playing and a very complete effort last night for my first game in 20 years. Need more students and less swearing...and better weather would help - wow! did the weather bring back bad memories.

Speaking of bad memories. I went to my first basketball game in 10 years and what a disappointment. I think I like the Stroh, but with only about 2 dozen students on hand, maybe it doesn't matter that they have no seating for the game. Look at the Breslin Center and how the students get the best seats to drive home court advantage, ala Anderson Arena. The atmosphere last night was as bad as the play of our men's bball team. I felt horrible for the dancers and cheerleaders, but they put on their smiles and gave it their all. Other than that, what a waste of time. AD Kingston, here's your big opportunity to make your mark. I like your attitude and perspective - please put it in place for the men's bball program. The Stroh has potential.

Thus far the best atmosphere has been with HS tournament games. Men's basketball going through what hockey did a few years back. Hopefully they do not ax the program.

I still love the Stroh. I have only missed a handful of games since it opened, and I still enjoy it as a place to watch basketball games. Undeniably, the atmosphere has been poor, but I fully attribute that to lack of winning. You cannot expect students to come out and support the team when it's been horrible since before most of them started HS.

I do have to say I kinda wish they would have dedicated some of the premium seats to the student section, but I fully understand why they didn't. Most big time arenas don't, and if we start winning again it won't matter where the students are sitting, the atmosphere will come.

Actually, it's kinda sad, but that was one of the larger student sections we've had in the past 2 months. The games during break had probably less than 15 people in those sections.

Once the Louis Orr deathmarch comes to its end, I hope to god Kingston is ready to go out and find a real coach to turn this thing around. This is worse than BG hoops has ever been since I started watching with my grandparents in the 80s. We've had worse teams than this year, but the fan apathy and total lack of support is cumulative of the past 10 years. So sad to see it this way in a great new arena.
