I didn't know you could red-shirt a walk-on... :ugh:

Sure, you still have eligibility rules---not sure how common it is, though.

I love Patrick Phillips. I love most walk-ons that dedicate themselves to a team where they know they will play little. Maybe this will get him more PT in the future, if he stays around.

SCHOLARSHIP!

We have one left for next year. I would gamble Dakich said we have three guys leaving and one scholarship left for next year. Why not hand it over to a hard worker who already knows the offensive and defensive schemes. And more importantly he is a guy whom Dakich knows will be here and buy into his system. He has had some trouble finding guys like that lately.

P.Phillips is a Jr. though... he'll be back next year anyhow...

I agree 100% that he's a hard worker and he's the kind of kid I love to see on our team! Heck, he's from a tiny school that I played against in HS! I just don't get the whole red-shirting thing. As long as it's for the good of the program and Pat, I'm all for it!

Ditto. Man, if I could have made it as a walk on at BG, it would have been a dream come true - to be a D-I basketball player. I hope everything works out for Patrick and BG in this situation.

Yeah?.... and then he will have two years on scholarship, his redshirt Junior and senior year. I guess I don't see your point?

The reason you redshirt him is because we dont have ascholarship available this year and he wont play much anyway. So put him in tie at the end of the bencha dn pay him to play next year.

If they are redshirting Phillips to give him a scholarship next year, I find that rather upsetting, and hard to believe that its in the best interest of BG hoops. If you have a scholarship available, give it to him. But don't stop recruiting (there is still plenty of time left) and give a walk on your last scholarship. I just don't see the point. Is he a hard worker? Yeah. Is he ever gonna contribute to the team on the level that it takes to earn a scholarship? I hope we don't get to the point of needing him on the court.

I really don't think this is about a scholarship. I believe Pat has an injury and wants to be able to stick with the team as long as he can in any capacity! I think that's awesome!

Grant,

I think you're right, because I don't believe you can redshirt anyone for non-medical reasons if they've played in a game yet, can you? Or is that only for football?

Either way, when I first saw the thread name I figured he had an injury. Then I hadn't heard it brought up here yet, so I thought he must not have an injury. I don't get the Sentinel, so I haven't seen the actual article.

Hammb, right on the non-medical redshirt rules. One of these is usually appointed before the beginning of the season. As for medical redshirts, one is only granted if a player suffers a season-ending injury before he has played 20 percent of his team's regularly scheduled games.
