Tired Team

There was a story last week about how tired the team was from road trips, especially after the bus trip to Northern Illinois. My question is, why aren't we flying to places like DeKalb and Buffalo? The program received a huge endowment that is supposed to throw off something like $700K per year for the program. A few charter flights per year would be peanuts, and could also be used as a recruiting tool. I'm assuming the endowment is generating money at this point, but could be wrong.

The endowment left by Mr. Frack is for coach salaries and recruiting.

The money has to be distributed to the program from the trust. That distribution has not taken place yet.

Also, Mr. Frack could have stated what he wanted the money to be used for - salaries, guarantees, recruitment. If he was specific about how he wanted it to be used, travel may not have been on his list. I doubt we are looking at purchasing a timeshare in NetJets.

BG to Dekalb is only 5 hours. 30 minute drive to the airport, hour flight to O'Hare, hour drive to Dekalb, add in 30-40 minutes to board, get everyone situated.

Buffalo is almost the same exact time frame.

Spend thousands more to save an hour or two?

Most schools use either a 5 or 6 hour radius when deciding whether to bus or fly. That includes schools that use charter flights for all of their travels outside that radius.

Why turn a $5,000 trip into a $25,000 trip if you don't have to?

Take a bus to Minnesota State, Michigan Tech or LSSU, play two games in a weekend and then tell us you're tired

I don't know that we need to be flying teams to DeKalb or Buffalo.

We need charter flights because Akron has charter flights. If you want to be the best you have to do what the best do. Find the money and make it happen.

That is the dumbest reason I have ever heard.

That's not really the case. Michigan State was upset it had to bus to Purdue a few years ago because a snow storm prevented them from flying. I've been trying to get people to realize for a couple years that there are no major and mid-major leagues. There are airplane leagues and bus leagues. I talked to a guy with Alabama A&M earlier this season and he said they bused 14 or 16 hours to BG for the game. If you have money, you fly.

I agree with mscarn. But I doubt BG can find the money.

Alabama A&M also pimps out their basketball team to pay for their entire athletic budget. They probably made close to, $150,000 plus expenses going to Dayton and Georgia Tech to start the year.

Big Ten, SEC, Pac12, Big 12, and ACC schools fly their money making teams EVERYWHERE, it's also pro sports. Ohio State flew the damn football team from Columbus to Indianapolis. It's less than a 3 hour drive.

We're arguing because a bunch of 20 year old basketball players had to ride on a bus for 5 hours. College sports!

And people say that ALL OF THIS MONEY that the colleges make, how can they not provide something to the athlete?

Well, put the football team on a bus and it will be a lot cheaper than a charter flight to Indy. I bet they didn't put the team up in a Red Roof Inn either.

The money is getting back to the athlete. Just not in their pocket.

What we "need" to do when it comes to Akron is learn how to beat them - and more importantly - actually beat them. Just once. To become the best you need to beat the best. The Zips have been to something like 7 of the last 9 MAC Championship games and have won 4 of them I believe. They have been one of the most consistent and better teams in the MAC for the last decade, similar to how Kent State was the decade before that.

Akron could ride bicycles to the games and BG could arrive by private jet and it's not gonna matter one bit how we do on the floor. It's not "how" you get there, it's what you "do" once you're there, that matters - and more importantly, counts the most.

Wait, has BG not performed well against Akron? Could someone please tell me the record for the 24th time in 2015?
