Sounds like Holmes' status is up in the air for EMU. Jans said he won't really know if he'll play until Wednesday. But we really need him the rest of the way if we want to advance and have any serious chance at making a run. Yes, I know we competed without him in the second half vs UB, and we beat a lousy Ball State team without him tonight. But we're a different team right now without him both offensively and defensively. Offensively, we essentially have zero true scoring option when trying to feed the post without him and we saw that tonight vs BSU. Nearly everything Gomez and Mayleben got, which was very little, was clean-up points and they combined to make just a pair of shots. When they're fed the ball it's coming right back out top and teams know that. Defensively, we have no rim protector or back line presence like him whatsoever. His ability to defend and alter shots is unmatched.

Jans stressed in our lone meeting prior to playing EMU's 2-3 zone that he didn't want us shooting too many three's. But to beat EMU, you're gonna have knock them down, which we did when we hit 11 of them. But if we're gonna try and break the zone with penetration and dish, we're gonna need someone inside who can finish, which is Holmes. He gave us a double-double vs EMU and was very efficient with his shots and we can't rely on feeding the post with no real answer. If Holmes doesn't play and our outside shooting isn't hot, we'd be in deep trouble. Because EMU is gonna grind all damn game long and can win ugly simply because their defense usually never wavers and keeps them in a lot of games and they have some capable scorers/shooters. In short, if Holmes plays, I think we edge EMU in a close one. If he doesn't, I think we fall short in a close one. Hope he's cleared to play. GO BG!!!

FYI - it was announced this morning that Holmes was selected as the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. The MAC Player of the Year & Coach of the Year awards will be announced Wednesday morning.

On ESPN3 broadcast last night, they noted that Holmes asked to get back in the game with roughly 6 to 8 minutes left [when Ball State made their run]. He was told "no" by the trainer and/or team doctor. My guess is they will see if his concussion symptoms are still there after their short practice today in Cleveland. If he clears that hurdle, they may let him play Wednesday. If any symptoms come back during a game, he would be pulled. This is per the return to play protocol for treating concussions. Every person responds differently to a concussion [days to weeks to months to recover]. Hopefully Holmes is OK.

I think we win Wednesday even without Holmes. Got a good feeling about these guys....

I hope Richaun can play, for Richaun's sake. But if he can't go, that's gotta be what's best for him in the long-term, which is far more important.

I was a little surprised, though, that when we called timeout with 30 or so seconds left to get the seniors out, that Coach Jans didn't put Richaun in, even to stand 90 feet from the basket, then get another timeout after the inbounds to be recognized by the crowd. Maybe that's part of the concussion protocol to not see game action, but it couldn't be any more harmful than running through pregame warmup.

I guess he'll just have to get his applause after cutting down some nets in Cleveland.

I kinda thought they might check him into the game too TG. Just for the applause he deserves at the end... Not that it is a big deal, since his health is far more important, but kinda thought it might happen.

And as Hdog stated Richaun was absolutely lobbying to go into the game when BSU was making their run. He was visibly antsy/irritated about not being out there as they made it a game. Overheard his father talking at halftime basically saying that Richaun wants to be out there now and says he's fine, but they wouldn't let him play. I'm sure it's tied to whatever the protocol is. Hopefully he'll be ready to pass the test and play at some point this week. I think we could beat EMU without him, but I'd like our chances a lot better with him...and I definitely think we need him to get through this week.

Tell ya what though, if we got past EMU without him and he were to be able to play on Thursday-Fri-Saturday having a player of his caliber on fresh legs could be quite the boost...

I sure hope he's being honest that he's okay. It's nothing to mess around with. I got knocked down last summer and cut my head open in our work league and I didn't feel right for nearly 3 months. That's likely why the trainers proceed on the side of caution.

But it would really stink for him and team if he can't go.

I hope he can play but I hope he plays only a few minutes here and there to get back into the pace of the game. Let him rest and let the rest of the team handle EMU. Only bring him in if we really need to but for his sake I'd feel much better if he rests and lets his body heal. The less he plays, the more physically ready he'll be for the next games if we beat EMU.

Wish I could go tonight but I gotta save some $ for our Florida trip in 2 weeks. IF we can get past the next two, I'm sure I can make it Friday and Saturday. LOL. Just positive thinking! Will have the BiG screen set up for ESPN3 the next couple nights.

Holmes starts but has left the game with anothe injury (leg or ankle if looked like). And of course, EMU has hit all three of their three-pointers already. What in the world is happened to our three-point defense?????
